New Z4 purchase, think I bought a duffer!

So I've just bought a Z4 2004 SE version that was apparently off the road for a while, now I know why I think.

On the drive home it cut out once but started again fine. I havent taken it out again but decided to read the codes to see what was up with the EML light on.

Looks bad :) Any ideas on what could be the root cause of it going wrong?

May be damp or corroded connections on the DME or could be a sick DME, hopefully the former.
 
As suggested check DME connections for corrossion on the pins and clean first.
Replace the crankshaft sensor
Dont worry about the thermal oil level sensor sort the first two out first. Replacement will involve draining the oil to remove it from the sump pan.
Can't comment on the thermostat map cooling activation but it may be related to the DME connections being dirty.
Before delving into all these clear the codes and see what returns before replacing parts.

Z4s, like most BMWs, seem to throw up totally random fault codes whenever the battery is below par. I got codes for post-cat O2 sensors on my 2nd Coupe just before the battery died!

Once you have the battery well charged I'd try clearing the codes as Rob suggested - hopefully they won't come back. :thumbsup:

Thanks for this, i've got a nice code reader so cleared all the codes and it seems to start and run fine after a battery recharge.

Will see how it goes from now on. Thanks all for the help.

That's great news - fingers crossed there will be no more fault codes. :thumbsup:
 
Amazing how many wrongs can be righted with a good quality new battery. If the car has been sitting for a while the old battery will be past its best for sure.
