New Z4 owner - troubleshooting a clunk

Hi forum - just bought a 2004 Z4 3.0L 6 speed. I've noticed a minor "clunk" that sounds like it could be a u-joint or CV joint type of thing... easy to reproduce when driving but got it up on a hoist and couldn't reproduce or find an obvious area of play. Wondering if this is a common issue that the collective brains on the forum know about and if someone can point me in the right direction! Thanks in advance!

Is it a clunk when you go from driving forward to reverse and reverse to driving forward coming from the back ?

Sorry should have been more specific... clunk happens when coming on and off power at lower speed. For example in first gear... coasting... apply power, slight clunk... come off power... slight clunk. Appears to be from driver's side rear wheel area. First thought was CV joint but on inspection there is no play (other then the side to side play which is needed to accommodate the suspension travel).

You say the rear, but check the braces under the bonnet. These are a common issue coming loose.

Rvolburg, had the same issue on my 3.0si and my Indi knew what it was straightaway. He regreased a part on the drive shaft splines and this sorted the problem. Wasn'tan expensive fix and a known issue.
Hope you get sorted and it's as straight forward.

+1 to have this checked.
Its a known bmw fault as paul has said, BMW even sell the gunk (loctite 660 I think) to fix it, its listed on real oem.
That said for me it was only when moving off in 1st or reverse from a standstill, your problem may be a bit more involved but if your messing around the propshaft to fix something else it might be worth doing this as well
