New Z4 Owner Question

Hey guys after about 5-6 months of searching and deciding, I finally found 2011 Z4 35i in great condition (which some minor paint scrapes and curbed rims, all of which is going to be paid by previous owner for repair). Anyways I got a great deal on the car and it is a lease take-over with a very low buyout. Enjoying the car immensely, but I noticed when I took it to the car wash there was a few drops of water leaking in from the A pillar. My question is will BMW cover this if I took it in and ask for warranty work? Probably should just take it in and ask on my next maintenance schedule as I'm lead to believe that all BMWs have maintenance included for the first 4 years,

As of 1 dec 2014 in the U.S., only the original owner of the car qualifies for the BMW 4 year/ 50k mile warranty and maintenance plan. If the original owner/leasee sells or trades in the the car, the remaining new car warranty and maintenance are not transferable to a subsequent owner.

In the U.S., the BMW no cost maintenance plan covers all maintenance (fluid changes, brake pads, clutch replacement, wiper blades, adjustments, annual maintenance, etc. ) for 4 years or 50k miles and includes a BMW loaner car at no cost during maintenance or warranty repairs. The warranty covers everything but tires, glass and physical damage for the same 4 year duration. Rattles, leaks and any other broken item are covered for the entire warranty period.

Has the car been recently pressure washed ? As this can force a few drops into the car but the seals are still ok under normal wet conditions
Welcome to the forum

I'm hoping you don't take your car to one of those automatic car washes... :o

My car does this under a high-pressure hand wash - water seeps dribble through the corner of the A pillars. Seems ok in the rain, but BMW have the car booked in to look at the seals this week under the warranty, even thought the service rep said that they are not designed to hold up against a high pressure washer- I'll keep you posted, as many members have no issues with it at all.

Many forum members also recommend using this product to rejuvenate the seals/rubber work, & I'd give that a try first - Einszett Gummi Pflege, Rubber Care Stick, 100ml (Einszett Gummi Pflege, Rubber Care Stick, 100ml)

Every-time I go into a carwash, a make sure to have a small towel with me to wipe/hold up to the A pillar - but it's easier to ask the people washing your car to avoid using the pressure washer directly around the roof seal lines :D

Yes, the dealer will cover leaks under warranty.

No, you should not let them touch it.

I love all of them but in general you do not let generic dealer mechanics touch the robotic origami that your convertible top is. If you need urgent repair you look for a particular individual who has real-world credit in dealing with them. Such an individual might work for the dealer, of course.

I would start investigating by buying that ink-soaking paper that school children use for handwriting practice, that changes color when wet. Place it around the suspected leak area. The dark spots will allow you to home in on what exactly the leak is. If you didn't, use gummipflegestift liberally and massage all the rubber.

Do NOT drop it off at the dealer where they will rip off random sealers that didn't have a problem in the first place and put new ones in with lack of the special touch. Now you have 3 leaks.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I will look into using the products on the rubber seals first, I know where the leaks are and its only 3-4 drops each side when using the "touch-less car wash". I usually use the touchless before actually washing and detailing myself.
