New Z4 - now having seen it...

Went along to fairfield bmw to check out the new Z4, they had a black 23Sdrive with red sport seats and the standard 17" wheels (which look like doughnuts!). The car had the adaptive suspension but in the showroom it sat very high with plenty of arch gap - didn't give a particularly sporty appearance!

The build quality seemed better than my MY03 roadster however I did not like the following:

The new roof (which can be operated from the keyfob) takes forever and a day to open/close, no more putting up the roof at traffic lights if it rains... how come Porsche can get the boxster roof to open and close upto 30mph on the move :(

As much as the salesman tried to convince me the new bootspace is bigger its quite frankly not, using said bootspace is a chore and you have to raise the roof to get anything larger than a lunch box in and out. He kept banging on how you can but special luggage to fit it, on a longer jouney with luggage I would like to have the option of lowering the roof. The current roadster is very practical I find.

The thru loading system has dispensed with the nice cubby hole between the seats :( the cabin doesnt feel as snug without it. It has been replace by a net that goes across the whole of the back, looks messy!

The model I saw did not have Professional Nav but the stereo below the heater controls seemed a bit of a backward step. The old one became part of the dash and was in the eyeline for ease of use, the new one is a fiddly unit.

The price... well my s drive 35 with some nice options came to £44k... this is far too much for this car, that sort of money gets you into some much more pedigree motors such as a 2nd hand 911 turbo/Boxster S 3.4/Cayman S, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, various Maseratis or maybe a nice SL 55 AMG.

On the upside:

Its the latest thing for those into their car fashion and must have the latest and greatest version.

The sport seats seemed quite comfy, however they are wider than the old sport seats which for a slim jim like me is not a good thing.

The 35 twin turbo engine is great in the 335i so I expect it to be very nice in the Z4.

Nice write-up.

Apparently there is a legal reason the roof cannot be raised on the move. Because of the way the mechanism works, during the process of putting the roof up the 3rd brake light is obscured for part of the time. Apparently this is the reason they are not allowed to have this feature.

I presume this means an aftermarket mod like lots of us have on here would now be "illegal" on the new one.

Your feelings seem to virtually mirror mine having sat in it yesterday at Sytner Sutton.

Don't you just know that when the car is launched the dealers get a detailed 'overcoming objections' brief telling them about luggage as a for instance....push the custom luggage option, point to the greater cubic volume when the roof is up, etc. etc.....

To be honest I found the salesman very pushy and any critiques were met with 'its designed to be better than the old one and as a competitor to the SLK/it's going to make the old model dated'... they are also safeguarding themselve heavily on guaranteed future values (GFV) after being burnt in the 2008-09 finanical year.

Those looking for PCP will be in for a shock.

36 months PCP on a 44k Sdrive 35 with nav, PDC, sports seats, suspension, top stereo, bluetooth and 19" wheels worked out to £850 per month with a 4,400 (10%) minimum deposit and a rate of 10.9% APR.

Earliest delivery for a S35 was July 2009.

On the drive home I contemplated how my dated Z4 felt... for all of 5 seconds, styling wise it looks better in my eyes and has nice sharp handling and is a joy to drive again now the rear springs have been fixed and the gearbox oil refreshed. Its the first time since buying the car two years ago than i've enjoyed rowing the box and attacking a few country roads... it may only be worth 10k but its going to make me smile as much as a 44k 'new Z4'. If I wanted to change it I'd be looking to the 3.4 boxster S I drove last year, its a sublime piece of kit and a company called Hartec can offer some nice gold plated warantees and servicing packages to keep the running costs sensible.

The New Z4 'Overcoming Objections' Dealer Brief V1

There is no boot space: The new Z4 incorporates an innovative roof along with customised luggage offering truly the best of both worlds. Try to point out the handy net behind the seats.

The wheels look tiny: The majority of our customers prefer to specify one of the larger 18" options to customise their car, so we supply with 17". Best to agre that it's a cheap shabby trick to force them to upgrade, but as a new model we only get what we are sent....

It's not a softtop: With our new design you get all the benefits of a roof down driving experience with all the comfort and security of a coupe. At all costs avoid the fact it's neither a coupe or a roadster.

Hell it's heavy: 'comfort' is the response, or try for it's got 50% greater tosional rigidity than the previous model (ensure customer is baffled here about trade of betwen weight performance, comfort, features and add something about safety in)

Wow that Sat Nav is expensive: Many of our customers use portable devices but those who want the truly integrated look specify this [expensive] option (delivered with a smirk)

Fook me that back end looks like a whale: They got us here, but be positive!!!! Try for the look of the hugely popular rear on the 6 and 7 series (avoid laughing) and add its is to allow for the large boot space our customers have requested (If Q1 about no boot space has been asked already, respond it's a new EU regulation of third brake light height)

Jeez it's expensive: Not really when you compare it to the cost of other hardtops (try to list off the most expensive 4 seater Merc convertible currently avaialable (most won't know the difference between a CLK and an SLK). Again really they got us big time, but try to go with a 'quality is pricelsss' tag.

Any mention of discounts, cheaper on web sites, recession, shite trade in prices, then best to hide in the sales managers office for 10 minutes to think through the monthly target and how your gonna keep your job....

If you have any more objections please let me see if I can handle them for you....

They are certainly 'managing the customers expectations'

My keyboard is now spattered with coffee.. nice one CJ  :D

This is the worst thing about the SLK, the roof takes forever, and also the fact that the shelf needs to be pulled over stops you from putting the roof down on a whim. The shelf on the E85 is small enough to be left in the down position permanently, not so with the SLK or E89.

The side bolsters are electrically adjustable by a button towards the front of the seat, so they should actually be OK as long as they go tight enough.

Ah the one I sat in had manual heated sports seats, bit of an odd combination but didn't have any obvious adjustment for the side bolsters/kidney bolsters.

SLK AMG 55 might be fun

Airport lounges are a wonderful places to have to think how to waste time, when you can't be bothered to work....lol

Let's see what Edinburgh has to offer tonight :)
Plan on the Dome followed by iris for dinner.

After seeing the new Z4 in the flesh and owner's manual, I have to add Sat Nav. to the 23i and bring the price up to £37k. It is just ridiculous. :(

I think it all depends on the used pricing and availability. You can get a really nice <12 month old SLK280 or 350 for £30k or less, so £37k is just silly for a 23i or even a 30i.

Why is the nav so expensive as well, and not even having bluetooth either, which is another £500 or so on top?

I had a drive of the 2.5 version at Woodman's yesterday. Definitely feels bigger and softer - much less sports car more GT cruiser. Still has RFT's on, didn't like the aluminium interior or the rotary switch gear. Very shiny, Amercian bling. As a drive it was quite good but defo not for me. Not that I have any intention of selling my M but it's pushing me towards a Porsche for a replacement 'sports' car.

As for the boot with the roof stowed - useless!

Has anyone else noticed the black polystyrene blocks loose behind the kidney grille?

Driver can use iDrive (only with sat nav) to control many things in the car, vehicle settings, entertainment, etc. It comes with 12GB storage for audio files. I tried it in the showroom yesterday, it reminded me what I used to have in my E60.

The one I looked at was the 3l manual box. It did have the 18 wheels and sat nav, but that is about all I can really remember to be honest!!, apart from it was black! I go on the WOW factor. The feeling I get about a car when I first see it up close. Like the one I had when I first saw the Z4 I bought sat in the dealers! It just didn't happen with the new Z4! I sat in it and it was nice but you guys paid way more attention to it than I did! Nice car and I'm sure it is nice to drive, but it didn't float my boat! Shame! I really wanted to like it!
Lets see if I change my mind 2 years down the road and I've seen a few around.

On a side note, I did see 2 couples sat with salesman ordering one. They were both well into their 60's! So, maybe trying to compete with the Merc SLK has worked!! :P
