New Z4 M40i

No it's not an M, it's an M40i like the M140i or M340i. Doesn't have an "S**" engine number. It's all a bit mixed up now since M is used as a trim level rather than an actual separate model with different engines and suspension/brakes built in a different factory.

It is a bit mixed up / diluted now but yeah it’s like the M140i / M240i

Not all M cars have an ‘S’ engine number.

:| State of affairs with the ///M brand. I expect it goes like stink either way.

I always thought it went:

M sport = trim level.
M performance = m140i etc = top performing “normal” car
//M = m3 or M4 = the real deal and a stand-alone line

Yeah, a bit like Audi...

S-Line trim level
S1, S3, S4...
RS3, RS4...

Thank you guys for the info. I hope the M division to have something much better for the new Z4M, than this. I feel so lucky with my actual z4m after seeing this. :D I am jealous only for the dashboard.

M Sport used to mean up graded suspension and sport "mode" on the gearbox, I take it the 40i is actually a 3.0 with turbos and set up to increase power from the 35i

So, I don't know about everyone else but I feel like I've been let down by the new z4. Its more similar to the fiat 124 than anything else. They lost the BMW front bumper styling and the headlights are just wrong. Like why are they more vertical than horizontal, the interior i must confess is absolutely beautiful. But there isnt very many sharp lines or anything!!

I hope they do a hard top. Don't want to have to buy a Supra.

+1 exactly my thoughts

+ another! But from what I have read the Supra will be using the BMW engine, so there isn't going to be much Toyota in it!

Surely the letter M and the number 40 has no place in the model designation.
The model M40i just confuses people into thinking it is a 4 Litre engine.
Just call it a Z4 30i and be done with it.
If there is a 2 Litre engine call it a Z4 20i.
And if there are different levels of tune, stick something after these numbers.
Ive lost count the amount of people who have asked if our X6 is a 4 Litre engine.
