New Z4 M roadster owner

Hello guys!! Fist of all, I want to thank you for all your knowledge!! It has helped me a lot.

I knew I wanted an s54 engine, and all m3 I could find where SMG or had a many owners, or a lot of km and not in very good condition.

Then I found my Z4 MR, Silver with black interior, obviously manual transmission, 2007 12,000km, one owner, got it for around $20,000 usd, in Mexico, in my home town!! it had its original tiers! with plenty of thread!!

The only mayor issue, a side from minor paint chips and scratches is... it had its run in service at 6,000 km, and that's it, it only had that service in 2010, and change break fluid in 2012 at 10,000 km.

First thing I did was change the engine oil and filter with OEM parts from BMW, and I believe I understand most of its quirks, like shifting from 1 to 2 is a bit rough...

I have one question that has been bothering me... when the car is in neutral, and you rev the engine spiritedly, it kind of chokes... the car revs smoothly when accelerating... its just when in Neutral, and trying to rev the engine from idle... is this normal? it kind of feels the same as old carburated cars...

Quite a find & welcome to the forum ,
Going forward with the car first off i would have the oil & filter changed along with new plugs , i would also be inclined to have the gearbox & diff oil changed as that should have been done with the running in service much earlier than 6k Km , being in a hot country as Mexico i would also change the coolant ,
Any pics always welcomed

Hi

Welcome to the forum .. good purchase .. whats that I can hear ? tick tick trickery tick .. knock knock .. oh dear, spinning rod bearings

Crisis .. the M Z4 values are starting to fall .. end of the world as we know it ... clonk clonk whiz bag :poke:

sorry .. welcome .. I could just not resist this bit of banter so sorry :fuelfire:

At least on the upside whatever may go wrong he will be comforted in the knowledge his M is unlikely to fall in value
Unlike the current offerings :poke: :P

Hi gossier and welcome. Not sure what to make of that service history. Guess the first owner didn't appreciate what they had. Stick around and chat not all Trolls on here.

Thanks for the worm welcome! I have changed the engine oil and filter... Guess I will change the transmission, diff and coolant fluids as well. I have not had a chance to get some decent pictures of the car.... I will try and get some with the lovely scenery around here in the Sierra Madre mountain range.

My best guess is the owner did not knew what he bought. A lot of times rich people come into the dealership and ask for the most expensive z4.... He probably did not even like it ( being a manual, noisy, and stiff suspension) and did not use it.

What I meant before about the engine stuttering when you punch the accelerator in brefly... and let it out instantly... I have attached a video.

Again, you would not know this happens driving regularly! I find it a bit odd.

Welcome to the forum, ignore the likes of Bond. He's just a troll.

A bit harsh :o

He's not as bad as some of the keyboard warriors on this forum

Welcome along. Just watched your video, there's an issue with the idle when you blip the throttle, it drops right down and almost stalls  You'll probably best having that diagnosed at a dealer, could be a component failing or an air leak on the inlet? I'm guessing, good luck in getting it sorted :)

Not sure what just happened above...?!? But welcome to the forum OP! Great purchase - certain you'll enjoy it!!

Try a throttle reset....

Also... The throttle position sensors can go faulty and cause this kinda fault..

What octane fuel do you use?

Welcome to the forum - your are in for a lot of fun, and this place will drain your wallet in no time :D

Ignore the above, it's not typical of this forum as you probably know

I'm pretty sure the OP was asking for help, not some 'hilarious' banter.

Anyway OP, that's quite some drop in revs there. I would be looking towards the two Throttle Position Sensors as mentioned, dirty Idle Control Valve, or potential MAF issues. All worth a clean up and see if that helps. TPS sensors are probably best just replacing though. Let us know how you get on.

Hello All, And thanks for all your help and suggestions!! Now that I know it is definitely not normal I will have a look at it.

It has always done this since i bought it, and I have removed the battery a couple of times, so throttle reset does not help my issue.

As for Fuel, PEMEX, Government owned and monopolized, is my only option with 92 octane. That is what I have been using.

The computer does not emit any kind of code... and it only does this when I blip the throttle...I cant even feell it while I accelerator at a stop light.. normally or spiritedly.

I don't know what happened above with the trolling and stuff... it was a bit awkward, but I can ignore that stuff and read the welcoming and helping comments.

As for user James Bond, My wife has a 2004 330ci convertible with 65,000 km it has been her car from new, but I belive now I drive it more then she does. It has the M52 and it is a great engine, but It does not come close to the S54!!! Not in Sound, performance, and power delivery.
I have had to replace the VANOS seals and both camshaft sensors on the M52, and the DISA valve is soon to be replaced as a precaution... so I guess they have their fair bit of problems too.

Both BMWs are weekend drivers or spare cars, so the will not be driven a lot..

92 Octane should be ok. Is that the best you can get? Most people here in the UK run on about 98ron, which is slightly higher than the 92, but only marginally I think. The knock sensor should account for that, you just might not be getting full power

It is the best I can get... In Mexico PEMEX only offers to fuel types + Diesel... 87 and 92 octane... not sure if Octane booster could help?

I will try to clean the MAF sensor

92 octane is low for these cars...

You can feel a marked difference when you go from 95 to 97/99 octane.....

Try some octane booster, but i feel you maybe chasing your tail trying to get it to run well on 92 octane.. :(

To be completely honest.... I highly doubt that it is even 92 octane...

There are tons of reports throughout the country saying they give us less volume on each liter... what guarantees that they give us high quality fuel?
