New z4 e89 owner with a couple of issues

I bought a second hand (great condition) mesh wind deflector from eBay for £110. Additionally I bought the required brackets (about £3 each on eBay) then removed the hoop covers and drilled the relevant holes. So much better and no rattles, even at motorway speeds, all for £120. Definitely recommend!

My E89 rattled like crazy. Totally ruined the experience for me

My pre facelift buzzed & rattled down the road but my post facelift car is pretty much silent, i suspect assembly tweaks & mods have made a difference.

I don't think this can be the case since it appears the OP's car is a 2013 LCI model?

Newer BMWs seem to have light steering as I had in my 2016 F20 which I believe is the same steering in the 2 series coupe, but all my older BMWs including this Z4 has what I would call 'meatier' steering, nicely weighted unlike the one in the F20. Once up to speed it doesn't feel heavy at all.

Mine is a 2009 car, when I got it it had some minor squeaks and rattles but I have managed to get rid of 99% of them, it doesn't rattle or squeak much now unless going over some pretty rough roads. Putting that gummi pledge or however you spell it on all the rubber seals helps but also if you do a search here you will find an article which shows the various points to look at to solve the rattles.

I would get some of this, and coat all the rubbers, on the roof, that should make it squeak a lot less.., i swear by it,

I use this but when it runs out I’m going to try Vaseline, my superb Indy swears by it to reduce leaks and stop rattles

...but vaseline thins out in the heat and eventually dries out, I think. So maybe that Gummi stuff will work better?
I’ve not got that much squeaks to be so concerned about also seeing roof is down at every opportunity :driving:

After reading the comments in the thread I’ll be sticking to the Gummi juice :o

Hi,

Steering wise, the steering on our 2012 E89 is a bit heavier than it was on our 2013 F21 1 Series. That said the steering on our 2019 G20 3 Series is heavier than the F21 and much better for it. I always disliked the 1 series steering when we had it. It always felt too light, vague and disconnected with the road for my tastes. Especially for something purporting to me a "drivers car". Honestly I always felt our E85 Z4 steering felt better.
BMW seem to have had a better handle on electric steering by the time they launched the G20. That really is quite nice especially in sport mode. Really wish the E89 was more like that from the factory, hopefully some M3 arms might go some way to correcting that.

Yes Vaseline on rubber is a jolly bad idea, on this one I wouldnt listen to your Indy

for the money, gummi pfledge is very good stuff, it's certainly NOT rubbish. Probably why it's still a top seller worldwide unless rubbers etc are too badly deteriorated.

Thanks for the replies. New wind defector quoted at 500 from bmw so I’m not bothering with that 😂
I’ve got the silicon spray to play with and will look at a tyre change... any recommendations on the tyres?
You can pick up used defelctors on gumtree/Ebay etc.
Or you can simply buy a new one from BMW and purchase the brackets to fit.
Fitting is a piece of cake.
Where are you located PT?

Tyre wise, the best are Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (and most expensive), around £660 for a full set (35i)

Pop into B&Q and you can buy a tiny pocket sizer aerosol of siicone spray from the plumbing department, it works far bette than gummi pfledge which is a rubber conditioner, not a squeak stopper, although it does help.
