New Z4 boot space with roof down.

Thats just silly, even with the "comfort access" option. Imagine the wear on the roof mechanism - you have to use it every time you want to load or unload the car!
I'd expect that any additional wear would be offset by more regular use keeping the mechanism loose. My roof certainly benefits from regular operation.

Only just joined this forum, so encourage me...new sDrive35i coming in September.
Never owned a "Z" before...but have owned a few BMWs. :D
Now......Should the boot-space govern your feelings about a car in this sort of market?
Surely if you wanted that you'd consider a different car.
Life is about compromise and as a package, the new Z4 model seems to press all the buttons.
Was contemplating a Cayman/Boxter - fabulous cars...but the thought of driving to Scotland, say, with all that racket?!?!*&$
Sheesh, no thanks!

Probably right, I think we're just spoilt with our cars that they are incredibly practical, my roof is also incredibly warm and quiet so we don't see the point of a hardtop.

That aside, your car looks absolutely awesome and I think the other fella saying he doesn't need to move his case when the roof is down also has a very valid point.

Be interesting to see how you get on when the dust settles!

Well I finally got around to checking out the new Z4 in the flesh and I was shocked at just how small the trunk (boot) is with the top down. While it may be deep enough, I am not sure if I could even get my briefcase comfortably through the narrow opening left.

Maybe we have been spoiled with our current cars, but I really feel that this new model is a step backwards

Now you are bashing a boot space with roof down.

Well for me reasonable bootspace is very important. I use my Z for everyday commuting and -unless its raining- I always drive with the top down. The new Z4 is just like the SLK, I always see SLK's with the top up on sunny days, apparently for boot space reasons. So my current Z is the end of the line for me, I will drive it for another season or two an will see what's available by then. But afther this one no more Z4 for me. How dissappointing!

That's exactly the point with me. In my current car, I can take a 4 day trip for two people with two bags, car cleaning supplies and still drive with the top down. It allows me to actually enjoy my car. The suggestion to buy a different car is a very good one, which is why I, and many others will do exactly that. For those of us with the older version, we are spoiled and this "minor" change is a bit hard to accept.

Welcome Z Victor. I hope you enjoy the forum. Pictures will be expected when your car arrives. :D

EdP posted these links earlier but you need to be registered to view them. It looks like a lot of luggage TBH, and not as bad as everything thinks it might be. Not ideal, but not too bad.

If that is true then it does look more than I imagined you could get in :D

Guess time will tell when I take my cases down to the dealer...

Yep, and at a push you could maybe keep some soft bags behind the seats too. Lots of small bags is the way forward, inconvenient but worth it.

That's a clever and deceptive shot. My buddy came round with his to show me and a very small hardcase and a single softbag and it was full. Sure you could squash a few more bits in, but the current Z4 I can get a huge case in and still have room for several squashy bags.

The boot of the new Z4 does take more than I expected. :) A weekend break with the new Z4 should not be a problem.

Lets approach this the other way around.

What does the hardtop offer over a ragtop here?

I can't think of any real benefit except maybe a tad less noise.

I can see a huge array of downsides though.

Why do people think folding hard tops are so fantastic?

These for me - hardtop...

- is more secure
- doesn't get furry when the cat sleeps on it
- doesn't get creases in it after a while which won't go away
- has better visibility (although I'm not 100% on the E89 having better visibility)

The advantages for me outweigh the disadvantages, although that won't be the same for everyone.

Absolutely agreed. Also, you don't need soft top cleaner and conditioner for RHT. Bird droppings on RHT is much easier to clean. The previous owner of my Z4 already got 2 small holes repaired on the soft top. :(

Not sure how it's more secure with smashy glass all over the top of the car...
I guess it's nicer in the event of a break in, as glass is easier/cheaper to replace! That said, I'd imagine a theif would just smash the glass on a ragtop anyway if they wanted access.

Cat, fair do's, but I'm not sure that BMW thought about cat owners!? Worth the extra cost/weight/boot compromise?

Creases? Look at them as a characteristic. I can't really see them on my car. Spent about 1hr when I got it, and another 1hr a few weeks ago doing the roof (clean/protect), and they are almost gone.

Visibility, kinda fair point, if you do lots of motorway work or never put the roof down anyway.

So it has a few advantages, but do they outweigh the costs?

Costs more.

Adds weight well up above the CofG.

Reduces boot space lots.

Potentially larger bills vs rag top when it goes wrong.

I honestly can't fault the rag top. I had imagined it'd be noisy, hard to clean, crease up like mad, but it's actually a total joy to have. It makes me wonder why most cars are not convertible to be honest. Feels like a Coupe up, a Roadster when down (obviously) :D

I'm happy that for plenty it's better though, just means I won't be buying one. I just *hope* that BMW make the Z2 a ragtop, because I would likely have one in the future as it sounds to be the 'new' Z4.

Just bought the Z4, car coming to port around mid July and to my house late July 09.

Dont really care about boot space when once buy a Roadster, we just made do with what we have. No enough space, I will ditch my girlfriend and go on a solo-trip!!!!!
Muhhahahaa :P
