New York Marathon

Watching the news this morning, They canceled the Marathon but only after protest from the citizens of New York,
One comment from a guy working at a badly hit area said,
They seem to be more concerned about getting the water out of Battery tunnel whilst we are still pulling bodies out of the debris.

Says it all really, I can fully understand a city trying to put on a brave face through a disaster but in this case I think they should have pulled the plug on the marathon long before this, The world would understand.

My sympathies to all those who have lost their lives and to their familys.
 
Agreed. Not to mention that people (including British) are complaining that it has been cancelled.

Sometimes, charity needs to start at home ...
 
Totally agree with cancelling it, but also feel for the athletes who've trained for months etc.

Obviously that is irrelevant considering lost lives etc, but disappointing all the same.
 
Don't think anyone would have complained if they had called it off straight away. Must be pretty annoying to have travelled all that way to find out on landing that it was off.
 
When was it actually cancelled? Today or yesterday?

To be honest, if I had been doing it, I'd have thought it would be unlikely to go ahead considering the storm, but would've probably been too late to cancel flights etc, so would probably have gone anyway. I doubt the airlines will refund people will they?
 
Think it was cancelled today. Not sure whether airlines are running full schedules yet and guess they have some catching up to do. I wouldn't fancy heading out there right now but reality is often very different from the headlines.
 
My girlfriend works next to 5th Avenue at a Thai restaurant, opposite Empire State Building. She hasn't worked the past week as there is still no power, small businesses are really suffering whilst the tourist attractions have power. Staten island is really bad, no water, power and foods running out fast. There is a definite divide where the affluent parts have received priority and the immigrant parts have been left to rot. Its really bad in places. Holding a poxy marathon would have been a complete joke.

Tim - a marathon is not a poxy event....it takes months of training to get fit for one.

However, in the context of the events, then yes, I take your point that it does pale into insignificance.

What I am more upset about is that we went to NYC in January and you never hooked me up with your girlfriend for a free meal. Thats not very forumite like is it? :D

I wonder what the people in New Orleans think about it, considering the hell they had!
 
It is being reported that one of the tunnels in New York will take over a month to pump out all of the water and the water is salt water so once the water is out the damage from the salt water is likely to be massive. I live 85 miles West of New York and there are still areas less that one mile away from me that as of right now have not had electric service restored. A neighbor a few blocks from me lost most of his roof and the water damage to his home from the rain is massive.
