New year Z4 Coupe purchase.

Afternoon all, after looking at upcoming expenditure etc I reckon I will have to put the plan of a Z4 M on hold for a while. However, I do fancy a change. Insurance expires in February and I think I will change the car then. I have a 3.0i roadster currently and reckon a coupe would be nice for a change.

Just wanted to ask a few things to the lovely Z4 forum contingent, have any of you made the roadster to coupe swap? If so, what do you like/dislike about the change?

Also, are there any well known issues with the coupes that I would need to be aware of?

I'll probably have about £8.5-£9k to spend when all is said and done, would this get me a nice coupe?

Anyone have a planned sale of a Z4 coupe in the new year?

Thanks all

I've made the change / step up and don't regret it one bit.

Sure I miss the top down driving on a lovely summers evening but i love the look of the coupe and it's a pretty rare sight on the road.

I have thought along the same lines DPG, guessed I might miss the roof down driving. But I am a big fan of the Coupe styling and shape. Only thing is, I am being told by others about issues with the engine in the 3.0 Coupes, more specifically the HVAs in the N52 engines. :|

Same applies to roadsters with that engine.

Just get one with warranty if it concerns you

I owned both at the same time, 2 x3.0si I found myself always picking the keys to the coupe , even on a sunny day. The looks are enough to win this argument on its own without mentioning the better chassis , driving experience and fewer on the road etc etc Where ever I park it people always comment on how good it looks, although obviously I miss all the hair dresser equipment that's standard on the roadster.... :fuelfire:

I will probably buy privately DPG, always seem to. Warranty not really an option as a result.

I am willing to forego the hairdresser equipment in my roadster Stug, never had that much use for it.

What about my budget lads, that should do the job shouldn't it?

Slightly confused which one you're after based on your post!

Assuming you are looking to change for a coupe though, your budget is the very bottom of the barrel, there aren't many for less than that so you're looking at an early one (2006) with over 50k miles, maybe higher.

That's not to say you won't get one, mine was 8k, but I had to sacrifice mileage. You won't get a mint, low mileage one for that kind of money.

Personally I think the coupe looks way better and I assume it drives better too, but I've never been in a roadster so will keep out of that argument :poke:

Edd, thanks for pointing out the ridiculous number of mistakes in my OP, think they have all been sorted now. Not sure what was going on there!!

I do indeed mean that I am looking to change to a coupe. I will try and beef up my budget as much as possible, hopefully I can get a nice example. I love the look of the coupe and figure I may as well give it a go and see what I think!

I don't mean to put you off, you certainly can get a nice one for 8k (I even saw one for 6k a couple of months ago, albeit with 175k on the clock!) but I know many people are fussy with mileage with new-ish cars so I don't think you'll find a sub-50k one for that kind of money.

£9k should land you a decent coupe but will be heading towards the doomed 100k or beyond  not a problem if its been looked after ,
i sold mine with 92k & it was not reflected anyway in the drive, the interior or the exterior .
Just be flexible on the colour / spec / mileage & you should achieve your objective ,
Feel free to post up any possibles

There was a fantastic coupe for sale over here a couple of weeks ago, I would guess it is sold by now. It was a 2006 3.0si with 32k miles on it and he was looking for £9450 IIRC. Had circumstances been slightly different and a trip to Paris not happening in 3 weeks I'd have tried to sort a deal out for it.

You can add a BMW warranty, they wont cover pre existing issues and there is a 30 day period before you can claim. I don't believe an inspection is required even.

Down sides of course not cheap and locked into main dealer servicing.

That's what I did. Best £500 spent seen as my gearbox replacement was nearly £4k.

That might well be an option actually. If something expensive was to arise then it would prove to be a good investment! The first priority is actually getting a coupe! If the right coupe doesn't appear I am being tempted by the 645ci, but I would rather have the Z4 Coupe.

I was also looking at these before I got my Z4. Great looking cars but I was put off by the age of cars in my budget. A car that cost 70k new is not cheap to maintain, and when approaching 10 years old (which is what you'll be looking at with an 8k budget) there's a lot to go wrong with them.

It was nice to drive though :)

Like I said Edd, the budget will be £9k over more if the car is right. 645ci is very tempting but at my age and with no kids etc to cart about, should probably enjoy sports roadsters and coupes while I can!
