its a standard excess charge, typically anywhere from £50 to £75 or so depending on insurer.....

This is worth a read as Autoglass don't come out too well in the quality of service they give:

Make sure Autoglass is on your insurer's approved list - otherwise YOU end up with the whole bill.

I have picked up at least 5 new stone chip over the last few days which are quite bad. Better wait until the weather improves and the roads are sorted out before having a new windscreen fitted.

Are Autoglass really that bad?

I have seen a few people here have had issues, but people always say when they have a bad service, but never when they have had a good service.

I can't believe that Autoglass have only ever done about 4 or 5 Z4's and done them badly, and the owners are on here :)

Not saying they are good generally, but I don't know they are that bad generally from the evidence seen.

Any windscreen fitter, by and large, could be complete crap, or really good, likely depending on the fitter at work on your car! Watching them like a hawk will solve the worries most have I would imagine. If they are inexperienced or do something wrong you will see it :)

BMW changed mine just before Christmas, but whos to say they didnt get Autoglass in to do it? I cant believe BMW would replace enough screens to justify doing in house. My local dealer only started fitting their own tyres 2-3 years ago.

I just made sure I got them to do a condition check before leaving the car with them and checked the position of the screen when I collected.

Best thing to do is get a tippex pen or similar and put some marks on the car as guides for the fitter.

It seems the common mistake is just fitting too low in the aperture. Make sure it's sat right and you can't really go too wrong as it won't sit too far up, only too far down. When it's in the right place it's in the right place :D
