New Windscreen

Had a new screen fitted today due to a crack that developed from a stone chip that was there when I bought the car.

I brought the OEM screen trim last week from my local stealer as has been suggested in other posts, about £25.

Well it started with a phone call from the fitter saying I'll be later than expected as the office didn't order the screen trim. No problem I said I have one of those :D

Now when I booked the fitting all the guy wanted was the registration number and they would get all the screen details from that, so when the fitter pulls a clear screen out of his van and not one with a green sun strip I was hardly surprised :headbang: but after a bit of head scratching and pondering I decided to go for the clear rather than wait till next week and another wasted day sitting around.

Well I have to say I'm glad I did it looks much better without the green tinge, the trim around the screen fits perfectly and he didn't break anything in the process of removal and fitting.

So after being a bit apprehensive about having a new screen fitted it turns out I didn't have to be, thanks To Chris from Autoglass

Good news!

I am hoping that the stone chip I have, which was there when I bought the car nearly 3 years' ago, will develop into a proper crack soon. I assume that the windscreen is original and with 106k miles on the clock it's not as clear as it might be!

Glad you got it sorted  I bought a new oe screen all packaged from a guy on ebay £150. Oe rubbers and scuttle cover. Had my Pal fit it al for £80. He's been a screen fitter for 30 years, has the contracts with dealerships. Maserati, Ferrari, BMW, Audi to name a few. He does London only work, so if anyone needs his number pm me.

I had the clear Pilkington Screen. I thought it looked odd with the tinted sides windows. I like the tint and green band. Adds a touch of class imho. But to the uninitiated it matters not.

You did well there
When I brought the rubber I got a quote for the scuttle and some clips and that was £130 odd less a bit of discount so £230 for everything fitted was a bargain.

Oops, a bit of a 'typing to fast and not proof reading error there'. I paid £160 for the screen, £160 for scuttle cover clips and rubber + £80 fitted.£400 total.

Hmm not as good as first thought then ?

Was it worth the extra cost just to have an OEM screen I wonder.

As long as it's worked for you

And the finishing touch thanks to Taz
Also you can see it better without the green sun strip. :D

The screen was £160 new in packaging on ebay. Well worth it. The way I see things is that I've bought a car second hand that was around £30K + new. I paid very little for the car that has spent most of it's life in a garage and has been looked after and all service and work records (though there's only a few) all show BMW parts fitted.
What's the point of cutting costs and loosing the original specs? Saving a few quid here and there and before I know it my car is no longer a BMW but a mish mash or cheap aftermarket parts. Tbh, I don't mind paying a little extra for oe parts. It's a BMW, I fit BMW parts. Maybe it's a waste of money in some members eyes. I guess if a part works and you can save a few quid here and there then no harm done. I don't get caught up in the 'You could've got it cheaper' mentality. Granted, if I can get the oe parts and do the work myself then I'll do that, more for the love of working on the car and obviously saving £150 and hour on dealership labor is no small amount if they're on your car for a couple of hours.
