New windscreen; advice please!

So, I got a couple of stone chips in my original windscreen.
The Autoglass standard replacement will cost me £75.
But, they can supply me with the OEM part for £220.
What do you think? Is it worth extra cost or is the OEM the same piece of glass with a BMW sticker on it?!
 
I think general consensus is that the 3rd party glass is usually ok - it's insisting on OEM rubber surround rather than the pattern parts which never fit right that u need to do.
Hopefully they will agree to that without hitting you for £220.
 
I've had 3 or maybe 4 pattern windscreens in my Z4. Quality has varied between the different manufacturers.

The Saint gobain? One was terrible for accumulating stone chips and scratches. I can't prove the glass was inferior, but it certainly seemed like it.

I think my current one is a solar shield. Seems OK, although has gained a few stone chips over the last year its been in.

Pilkington are really good. I think these are the company who make the oem screens. I had one of those fitted the first time I needed a replacement. Only reason that got removed was due to a massive cracked caused by a Boulder falling off a hgv.
 
Are you going through your insurer? I'm on my third screen since September in the Zed - each time I pay autoglass £75 and my insurer has agreed to pay for OEM glass and more importantly the seal/gasket

Most companies will let you have OEM you just have to be persistent

My issue with this is that BMW don't make the windscreens, they just get the manufacturer to stamp the screen with a BMW logo, so what are you achieving by inflating the windscreen claim?

I understand the need for the trim to be Oem, but the windscreen can be from the oem supplier, but not an oem windscreen.

I would be all for getting an oem replacement if the car is still under manufacturers warranty, but for an older car like an E85/6, I don't see the point.
 
I’m going through my insurer (Axa) who have already refused to pay for the OEM windscreen. That’s why I’d have to pay the extra £220 for it.
It’s sounding like I should at least buy an OEM seal/gasket even if I just go with the standard glass.
 
I insisted with auto glass that I had oem and after some discussion got one at no extra cost. The fitter said they are far better as they fit way easier and therefore better.

£220 extra or instead of £75?
 
The Autoglass fella showed me two 'screens - one was manufacture and one not .
Apart from the Logo - both had identical markings and it looked like they both came from the same factory - but as my car has Adaptive Headlights (Not the Z4) he said that there is a mandatory alignment of the camera - BMW have there own kit to do this work and will not do work on a non BMW marked screen. Thus I only paid the £75.

I think the windscreen fitter plays a big part in the successful and accurate fitting of the glass.
 
To the OP. Do you have AUTO Wipers? I was told the aftermarket screens can cause issues with the sensor behind the glass.. The fitter doing my screen agreed when I questioned him.. Was Autoglass btw. Anyway, I used this argument to get an OEM screen and seal.. Your plastic scuttle panel might need attention afterwards...
