NEW WHEELS

I have recently bought a set of new 18" M wheels and need a bit of help. The run-flat tyres i have at the moment are the right size ready to swap straight over, great that'll save me a bit of cash. or so i thought. i got my hopes up about getting them on this weekend but most garages i'v been to wont swap them for me because of their confusions of the tyre pressure sensors.does this mean the warning light will constantly flash at me or not come on at all if i lose pressure? Kwik-fit even told me they wouldn't put them on because they aren't RUN-FLAT RIMS and that id need to buy regular tyres from them.hmmm? so when i caught a whif o' their shite i promtly left.i might not be a mechanic but i dont look like a numpty.at least i hope not. I called the dealer to ask but had left it too late and the parts department was closed. Even after asking politely if there was anybody i could speak to, i was quite rudely told to call back on tuesday because the holiday monday ment the parts department was closed and then hung up the phone when i was in the middle of asking to leave my number for the salesman who sold me the car to call me back.nice one bmw.after spending that amount of money on a car i cant speak to anybody about it and also get spoken to like a child.not to get carried away though, does anyone out there have any kind of clue what i should do? can i swap the sensors over to these new wheels or would that involve spending even more cash? or what would happen if i jus got the tyres fitted anyway? :tumbleweed: think iv gone on long enough.any replies would be much appreciated.

cheers

The garage you went to might not be talking out of their ass. Not all the rims will accept run-flat tires.

As for the pressure sensor, you didn't mention what year is your Z4. Hard to answer this question without knowing this information.

And why are you bothering with the run-flat tires anyway? Ditch them and get some non run-flats - better ride comfort and better cornering performance.

I believe there are no actual sensors in the wheels, as the system works be measuring any difference in rolling radius of the wheels using the same sensor that is used for the ABS system.

You can put any wheel and any tyre on and the sytem will still work.

Please correct me if I've got this wrong.

Oh i didn't realise that.my mistake.its a 2007.thought i would just keep my tires for now to save a little bit of money.for non run-flats i was quoted £130 per tyre for the front.thats about $260 and £190 per tyre for the rear $370.not the kind of money i want to throw around at the moment.as for the sensors i dont know what affect this will have?? do you think i'd need to get new sensors fitted?

thanks for your reply

You're partially right. What you described is how it works on '03~'06 Z4's. Starting in MY07, there's actual sensor unit inside the wheels to monitor the tire pressure.

I don't see how you can't just re-use your OEM sensors. But other people who have '07~'08 Z4's with aftermarket wheels will be able to tell you better.

Isn't that only on US spec cars?

My best bet is probably jus to call the dealer.hmmm?? thanks for your input anyway guys.at least i know what i need to ask now :driving:

I want to say I remember seeing somewheres that you can't put runflat tires on regular rims, but can put regular tires on runflat rims. Which makes me want to ask, what's the difference in the rims? I know people have complained though that lots of places don't like to work with runflat tires as they are harder to mount/unmount.
