New Wheels :) C4S

When I was looking at buying one I spoke to Porsche Chester and they said it didn't matter on the age of the car (although the one I was looking at was 52 too) as long as it passed the Porsche inspection then they would warrant it. At the time they were offering 2 years for around £1700, as all the OPC cars come with a 2 year Porsche warranty.

Like you said the secondary warranty companies wont insure to the correct amount when I rang around the max they would warrant was £5000 per claim and the prices were insane. If the engine went you need about £10k for a new engine with parts and labour. Which just wasn't worth having. They know fine well that these cars do and have gone bang in the past so no warranty companies will warrant it up to the amount you would need to sort it correctly. So you do need to be careful.

Unlike the BMW indies the Porsche approved service centres are about as good as it gets and Porsche will hold their warranties to these centres, they are very well respected and any potential buyer would see approved centres on par with Porsche dealerships. In terms of RMS they have developed a technique to replace it without taking the engine out which makes it much more cost effective. So it is done at most service intervals.

Most is scaremongering tho! Dealerships and specialists know fine well what the problems are and will make sure and ticked off the list within reason. Like they wont take half the engine apart to make sure the block is ok. But the more common problems will be checked. As long as it is looked after properly and it is serviced rigerously it will be fine. The problem is a lot of people buy them and cant afford to have them looked after properly or dont run them properly and they go bang! Which is why it is a risk buying a used one.

The ironic thing is that it doesn't cost the earth. Very similar to the M.

That’s a interesting post Tom I will look into that , as I was under the impression that they would not cover it :? , They did explain their new 996 service cost rates had just reduced which was interesting at Porsche Swindon I think it’s – 260ish for a minor and 400ish for a major, which I thought was excellent value.

This is the issue once they do become affordable the servicing sometimes suffers, Its a game of chance as always , the price over the last 12 months have really come down, A good one a year ago was an easy 20k plus there now mid/late teens will get you a nice example, sign of the times I guess.

Was speaking to my Boss he bought his 3 or 4 years ago and paid 45k! Lovely cobalt blue

Really excellent, much cheaper than the M with an ins II being 800-1100!

Ye my dad has a 997 CS got it about 6 months before I got mine and his has cost less than the Z to look after so far, but it was nearly new with only 6k on it so thats why.

Well when I was looking 18 months ago a perfect condition car 52-53 plate with <30k was about 26k or 28-30k from a porsche dealership fully loaded with a warranty.

The cars I went to look at that were about 20-22k were rough round the edges, and all at back road garages that put no confidence in me at all, the one I test drove had no pads left and the dealer wasnt willing to put N rated tyres on it. Thats the problem once they get passed a certain age, people dont want to spend money on them so they go into disrepair, and get into the hands of wheeler dealers, which means corners are cut.

Cars with around 45-70k on them were £18-20k, and I would want one without a warranty so in my mind that was the end for me. Was too much of a stretch because all the cars were I was interested in were in the 25k region 10 years old and no warranty and in my mind was a recipe for disaster. Thats why the Ms are so much better value, the Z4M is slightly quicker than the 996 C4S much easier to live with as a daily and was about 6-10k cheaper with all the new kit and BMW were giving 2 year warranties with them to compete with Porsche, so as much as I wanted one it just wasn't worth it. But there is nothing like the 911 the drive the sound the heat from the engine just makes the experience much better than the M. An itch that just doesnt go away.

With the value of 997's now the 996s must be going down in value, the 997 is a better car and the 997 Cs is more of a drivers car than the 4s although I would want the 4s because of the winters here. early 997s are hitting around the 22-25k it would be a hard decision. The kit in the Gen1 997 is old and clumsy too, annoys me no end all the rubbish tech although the one dad has is fully loaded. The only really good thing is the sound system the Bose kits are amazing. The Gen 2 is much much better and the 991 is cutting edge really made huge leaps, but the 997 and 996 are more to the original recipe so even if I had the money would be a 997 GT3 I think.

But the 996 C4S is the one to have apart from the turbo it is the classic of the 996 era, so prices will be stable for good cars. They look the absolute balls with that wide body kit on them, people say they look dated but I think they are an absolute classic and will always love them, just a shame it is a risk and atm I wouldn't be able to support a car like that.

Have you thought about upgrading the bearing? http://www.imsretrofit.com/

Still expensive at £1k + VAT

I was looking for that link too .... theres also a sensor adapted from the aircraft industry that can be fitted into the sump plug....it detects metal particles in the oil and lights a warning light mounted in the dash.

Not that you,l need them Paza with a new engine but anyone contemplating a 996 engined Porsche might be well advised to look into them both

Hi Kryton , no warrenty as she not an OPC. The warrenties I could buy are rubbish anyway so decided to go without. Worse case its 5 grand not the end of the world , so I decided if I could accpet that then so be it. Its got great S/H only 3 pre's owners and had a new engine and clutch+ fly 12 months ago, so hopefully she good. Last engine died and a new one was shipped from Germany.

Probably new engine due to scored bores, yes 3rd party warranties are not worth the paper their printed on IMO.

Sure looks a good example, :driving: happy cleaning :o :)

Lovely looking car. Just out of curiosity, what are the runnings costs like compared to the cayman S?

To be honest not much different, about the same petrol costs, tax is a bit more on my Cayman I think it was 460? or something and the services are a little bit more as well. All in all not a great difference. But as I need 4 seats now the 911 make a better choice for us

Kryton I know! I try to avoid black as it’s a nightmare!! But also looks so dam good clean!! , not sure why the engine was changed apart form it was a warranty claim , when looking at all the paperwork there is no evidence to what was the exact reason was. I rang them up to make sure all the work correctly carried out , but they were unable to give me anymore info. Could well have been bore related to be fair

Tom the 997 would be great and for the same reason I did not go for one back in Spet, as at 30k for a 6/7 year old car with 50k was a bit too much to stomach was looking at the 3.8s with Aero kit gen1, and at 3/4k a year depreciation I could not do it also would not have the funds to put it right if a major fault occured. My thinking was that the C4s cannot really go much lower now as it has a sort of "classic" status now therefore now such a bad investment, and running cost would be the only real cost issue. Thanks for the tip on the RMS method at each service

I love the black, it looks in stunning condition.....but I much preferred your cayman, sorry :D

Hey Patrick, nice car mate :)

Very 'Batmobile'! Fingers crossed she's good to you. Don't know much about Porches but that one looks very nice. Did you buy it privately? I'm sure you'll soon forget the RRS after a few spins in this beast!

Welcome back Paza - as said on another thread, that is indeed a lovely motor, and in typical style not ordinary in it's looks by any stretch
