New UK Road Tax cost for M40i

Anyone know what this is for the M40i.......assume its in the region of £2190 for a new car registered after April 2025. And for a car registered before 2025.......i believe its £620.
 
Not 100% sure but yeah, £2,190 sounds about right for anything new post-April 2025 thanks to the zero-emissions crackdown. As for pre-2025 M40is, I’ve seen £620 floating around too — give or take depending on optional extras and CO2 rating. UK tax man really said "M Sport = More tax."
 
Wow, Road Tax has got seriously expensive for anything decent!

The only positive thing is it will go down over time (is it 5 Years?) to a sensible level. My MC Road tax just keeps going up. :(

Indeed, the first years road tax fee for mine is £3,300, this is added to the purchase price of the car and which BMW heavily discounted. I didn't consider the actual cost of the tax when going ahead, only the monthly cost.

I also don't see complaints about the 20% Valued added Tax, which is considerably more

So at current rates, the UK Government is going to take £6,400 for the first six years just to be able to use our fantastic roads?

And there was me thinking that paying 'luxury VED' on a Ford Focus @ £620 p/a was ridiculous (which it also is).
 
My car is now old enough to only have £195 VED. I can live with that. I did consider getting a newer model at some point, but that looks to be further away now. I suspect I have a keeper.
 
My 1979 Honda is free, and the emissions are definitely not healthy :rofl:

If you want a low 1st year tax buy the new M5, because it’s a hybrid it’s only £250, compared to the M3, not a hybrid so it’s over £5k.

We can expect punishing tax rises to force us to buy EVs in the future
 
The UK road tax is a nice cash cow for the government, constantly jumping up in cost, for very little return.
But providing crap roads to use, with more traffic hold ups.

And it's only going to be getting worse, increasing population but on the same failing road network.
 
A year old ex demo is the way to go avoiding that initial hit and the VAT. Would never buy a new car again.

OK. I'll go and buy a £115k, 2.5 tonne M5. That'll save me a few bob! :?

The irony is I can buy a house for £115k and pay no tax whatsoever (whether it's 'green' or not).

The UK Government are all over the place with VED, and no-one has really taken them to task over it in the past 8 years. The system is a complete mess. They have changed the rules almost every year, but kept the previous rules for cars from the previous. It's nuts!

Some cars are based on emissions, some are based on new value (stamp duty as john-e89 said), some are based on both, some are based on neither and some are free cos they're electric and the Gov need to save face (which ain't working when it comes to EVs).

The 'luxury tax' threshold has remained at £40k for years, but RRP car prices have increased by an average of over 25% in that time.

A Ford Focus and a 1.0 litre Ford Kuga fall into the 'luxury tax' bracket now. So of course, the dealers can't sell the cars, no matter what the discount, cos the tax is based on RRP and no-one wants to give the Government extra money for nothing for them to waste on everything except the road infrastructure.
 
Off topic but it’s a shame the country won’t come together and refuse to pay any ved on the basis of the state of the roads, they can’t prosecute the whole country and it’d stick a major finger up at the idiots.

Obvs we should do that same strategy with countless issues, but we won’t, unfortunately, so we carry on being smacked round the head with a shitty stick. :roll:

They are one step ahead, mate. The RFL (old name) was replaced by the VED (new name) for any such eventuality. Vehicle Excise Duty makes no reference to anything to do with roads. It's an 'excise' which just means tax. VED is just another tax. It just gets poured into the massive pot to be squandered, sorry distributed, as the current Government sees fit.

We could go into the 'stealth tax rises' with all sorts in the past ten years or so; by keeping basic free pay on earnings static while wages increase, etc etc.
 
It's not just once a year, the road tax goes up twice a year and has been for a few years now.
I spend most of my time avoiding crap road surfaces and other drivers doing the same thing.

They will stick fooking 20 signs all over the place (that very few want) but can't repair the roads.
