New Tyres

I swapped the runflats off my 35is at 6k miles and wished I'd done it sooner, changed to Goodyear asymmetric 3s there're excellent tyres, quite, comfortable and reasonably priced, not so quick on a track as the Michelin's maybe but for me as a road tyre they are just what I wanted. And to soften the blow of buying the new tyres sold the runflats on fleabay for £150

I am looking at getting new wheels and none run flats for mine as well. The run flats are shite....

If you swap your wheels away from the 326's (I have them as per photo below) does the tyre pressure monitor system still work? Do you have to move any sensors across from the 326 wheels?

If he car has TPMS the valve stems are rigid - they would either be swapped onto the new wheels or buy new units.

The active sensors in the wheels would need to be swapped to the new wheels but the batteries have a typical life of 5 years so if yours are around that age or older, maybe wise to get new ones. Provided you get compatible ones the car will recognise them, they don’t have to be coded or anything.

Thanks. Are these active sensors expensive to buy? Sounds like another thing to worry about..... :?

Around £25-30 each but prices vary depending on supplier and make.

So Z4 uses TMPS?
i thought that TMPS worked with no sensors in the wheel at all and worked via the ABS system intelligently detecting a change in rotation speed of the wheel? They'd ironed out the early issues of a car going over a bump etc upsetting the system..... ?

To the OP apologies for the slight thread hijack but this is very relevant to your topic of changing wheels.

There was a change from rotation to TPMS on the E89 during its life - I think it was Smartbear who posted this a while ago?

If you have iDrive where the pressures for each tyre is displayed on the screen then you’ll have in-wheel sensors

There were at least 2 different versions of the wireless TPMS sensors fitted to the Z E89....there was a breakpoint at 2014..

Furthermore there are hard coded versions that only work on certain model years, there are versions that can be reprogrammed by a dealer with a special coder, and there appear to be intelligent ones that can be learned by the onboard system..

Basically you need your vin and trust a competent seller

Its not in question the Michelin 4 are impressive in terms of dry / wet grip & comfort drive but my recent experience with the PS4S on 326 19s / E89 i found them incredibly noisy :o tyre roar was off the scale to a point the first time my wife travelled in the car once we broke 60mph on mway she commented " is the car supposed to sound like that " :? no real noise up to 60 but anywhere over the noise level increased with the speedo , i sold the set of 326s fitted current wheelset with Pzeros & silence returned ( all tyres on both sets were approx 6-7mm)
Looked online afterwards they don't rate well in noise levels though do in all other departments so worth a ponder before dumping big money into a set of them /

I was wondering what tyres you put on your aftermarket wheels ?

Currently on Pzero Pirelli but Conti5 , Vred Vorti or Uni Rs3 would be others id go for .
For the majority of end users id wager good money the Michelin will rarely see the proper use to distinguish them from behind the wheel

I’ve been trawling the web for Tyres and found a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4s for £723 fitted . Is this a reasonable price?
forgive me but 700 quid for 4 tyres is insane.. i would want 4 tyres, sex and a week in spain for that kind of money :poke:
if you think thats reasonable you want your bumps feelin..

What would you buy?
I know that the MPS 4 tyres work well - how much would I save on another tyre?

Lets face it, the Z4 isn't the most sensible car to buy - Unless a drive to Spain is on the cards.

I will agree it ain't a practical car...

these came a very very respectable almost imperceptible 3rd place - all at 70 quid a corner.. delivered

Thanks - Ive looked but the prices seem to rise when I add the 19" bit in.
Have you looked at the Michelin PS4's? I've read good reviews for them, but can't speak from experience. In the end I decided to save a few dollars and went with Hankook Ventus S2's (probably a bit lower-spec than you're looking for though). I'm not tracking them and only go for 'spirited' drives every now and then, so they seem to work really well for me.

The only reason I say Michelin PS4 is because the M40i that I tried last friday had them fitted and have to say I was might impressed with them - I would hate to save £150/200 and then to be wishing I had just bitten the bullet and spent the £700 in the first place.

Im more than happy to listen to what folk say tho

Im in no blinding panic to change - ok they are the standard factory fit runflats but they still have circulation 7mm left on them !

Are we talking about the same thing? I was suggesting Michelin PS4's (the successor to PS3's) not PS4S's. Sorry for any confusion.
