New Turbo!!!

A thread about my x3, not the z4. I came back from holiday and bizarrely, after starting, the x3 engine sounded like a siren getting louder with revs.

To cut a long story short, I need a new turbo. My dads mate has quoted £2300 all in, including a new turbo. This is probably about right?

I expected it to be expensive but want to try and get the bill down if possible. The mechanic said not to use a recon turbo as they don't always last very long??

I've asked for the Indy in Telford for a quite, not come back yet. Any suggestions/recomendations most welcome on where best to source a new turbo myself or anyone in the midlands you could recommend.

Shouldn't be an issue with using a "recon" turbo unit from a recognized source.
As an example I had to replace a variable vane turbo on a 1.9VWTDI and Indy wanted around £850 for the turbo from VW....whole job around £1300
The trusted VAG Indy I use in Perth recommended a recon unit from a supplier he used and trusted at £250.
I think you need to get a quote from an Indy that you know and trust and ask his/her advice regarding the quality of the replacement turbo and tell them you want to keep costs reasonable. In my experience it's always about the guy welding the spanners.....find a good mechanic and treat them well...... it's worth the effort.

Nothing wrong with a recon turbo from a reputable source..........no more than £600 all in fitted :|

Cheers guys, I hoped the expensive route wasn't the only viable option. I'm gonna ring round tomorrow, spotted these people after Highlanders post, hopefully they quote a reasonable price:
