New Toy for the M135i

Hi all.

Ever since I took delivery of the M135i I've been hankering after an oil temp display, same when I had the E89, why don't BMW fit an oil temp gauge? . On the 1 Series you can search for the oil and coolant temps via the dash hidden menus but quite frankly its a pain to do and you lose other dash functions when displayed. One route is to fit the M performance race steering wheel with digital display which includes temps but at £1250 is a little OTT.

Anyways I found a company in the States that do a digital display for various makes and models that fits into the dash air vent and plugs into the OBDC. This gives all the cars engine parameters but will also record 0-60 times lol. I was just about to order one when a member on Babybmw had placed an order but his other half had different ideas so had to sell it before he even received it lol. Once he'd paid customs duty it was posted straight out to me so saving me a handy 100 quid.

Fitted it today and quite pleased with how it looks, you lose 2 of the vents otherwise it still works with the remaining vents so no great loss. They do the display for other BMW models including all Z4 models.

It's great now knowing what the oil and coolant temps are before using any decent throttle.

I am liking that 8) ... Fits in very well and doesn't look out of place in the slightest.

Can can change the units from degrees Fahrenheit to Celsius?

That looks good, not that I understand Fahrenheit much without painful conversions to "real" values :D

Nice little touch.......my E89 has this feature on the Rev binnacle anyway so I know when it's warmed enough to give it some. However it's something that BMW don't put on 4 cylinders and it would seem that in their quest to tell you how to drive economically they've removed it from your 1 series

Thanks guys, ooow unsure if it gives Celsius readings will have to have a look although I tend to go by Farenheight. Just realised looking at the pics I hadn't seated the lower vent fully so just sorted it

My X5 does not have ANY temperature gauge, how weird is that ....

You will probably find it has but you need to know how to access it in the hidden menus,

My E89 didn't have any temp gauge as Angie says.

Yes - but I meant there is no visible instrument for either water or oil temperature on the dash. This is the first car ever that I have had that does not have a proper temperature gauge fitted.

My Mums 5 series Diesel doesn't haven't it either but the petrol one previously did. Instead her 530d has he petrol gague and a mpg gague which is weird as you can get the mpg from the OBC

Yepp its called being done over by BMW :D They could quite easily make temp displays available but prefer to hide them away :(

Hmmm, don't mean to be a killjoy Tim, but I wonder if blocking the vent puts extra resistance to flow in the duct and ends up making the fan work harder with possible impact on fan life.

Just a thought...

Nah, so many people close them off altogether as especially women do not like airflow ….

No idea John but as pvr says you can turn all the vents off anyways with the fan still running :?

Wow I am surprised there's no oil temperature guage on the 135i
Noticed quite a few new vehicles with no temperature gauges except for outside temperature !

Afraid so, you can get relatively cheap OBD readers that plug in and work via blutooth with a phone app but they never have temp for oil, the P3 is the only one on the market I know of which gives oil.
