New Top vs Slam On Close

Hey all

My 2005 2.5i top is on its last legs and probably needs replacing as it's starting to tear and the glue is seeping on the outside. About 6 months ago, I installed the tension belts to fix the slamming roof problem and it has worked great.

My question is this: Will a new top mean that I can remove the new tension belts? I ask because the tears are actually where the screws are located that hold the tension belts. For some reason, they've breached the top.

In other words, is the old top the reason the top used to slam down when closing it? And if I install a new top, will that take care of the slamming issue on its own?

Thanks!!

I'm guessing new tension belts are included with the new top. However, contact the maker/selling vender to confirm these are included with the new top.

I guess that's my real question: Does the actual fabric top control how the top closes or is it a separate tension belt?

Well, you already know the original top had the separate tension system. I don't know if BMW still sell's OEM replacement tops. I also don't know how many, actually, even if there is more than one maker of aftermarket tops. If BMW still has OEM tops expect them to be costly, but most likely will match your original. Your going to have to address this question to either the maker or vender who sells the tops. Since your in LA, California I'm sure you have business that installs convertible tops. Consider either visiting or calling them and ask if there are any makers of replacement tops you should avoid.

Well, if by "separate tension system" that I installed - yes. But, does the stock roof mechanism have specific tension belts that wear out or is the "tension" created by the top itself? That I don't know. I guess I can check RealOEM to see what parts there are.

There are a bunch of convertible top shops here. I will visit several. One of them had pictures of redone Z3 and Z4 tops with before and after pictures. That sounds promising.

Any other help from anyone who's replaced their tops is welcome!
