even a paper map would be better then my oem nav!

The new tom tom go looks really good.. i like the change to its layouts....

But I mainly use my iphone with tom tom now when i want to go places... how much demand is there for dash mounted sat navs now?

Still pretty high, The cost of OEM systems is still prohibitively high for what has less function than an aftermarket devices in some cases. iPhone and Android users can buy TomTom app which essentially replaces the hardware, so yes this cannibalises some sales. But whilst there is a number of users with smartphones there is not a high number who use navigation on their device.
So for the time being there is still a huge demand, more so outside of UK/USA

Have they reinstated the proper custom routes/itineraries that they removed with the 1000/1005 series?

Actually this would be a massive win!

I don't believe so, because of the advancements with IQ routes and HD traffic, I think custom routes would be in conflict with the device trying to calculate the best route for you.

There is a concept device designed for commuters that allows you to choose your routes and remembers the regular journeys you make (home-work) it then shows you the traffic situation on the different route options, so as you approach your usual shortcut home it shows how the current traffic may affect this route.
I've been testing one for a while and if you don't want/need a map then it's great.

Actually i think for the mass market you are right... but where we used to use these were when planning meets... we dont want efficient routes.. the longer hooning way is the better way :poke: :driving:

I think this is especially true for older cars.

When I was ringing around the dealerships to find my ideal zed, I specified it to NOT have nav. Needless to say that many of the sales reps are confused somewhat at the request, but copilot on my iPhone works so incredibly well and integrates fabulously with my aftermarket stereo system.

Oh and the OEM nav in my 2011 smart didn't even have full uk postcode entry.

The removal of the itinerary route planning was a major failing on the part of TOMTOM.

If you've never had it, you might not miss it, but for those who have planned trips across countries or just a simple hoon, its a major drawback & why I'm sticking to my old 720 GO, even if it's not the fastest to refresh on complicated junctions

Otherwise it looks a fabulous UI

Have they fixed the issue where the unit just reboots itself for no reason? I've got a tomtom 530 (I think...been that long since I used it) and it used to randomly just re-boot for no reason. Sent it back to tomtit for investigation and they said no fault found....so it obviously was working how it was designed.

Can't go wrong with a TomTom - why resign yourself to an expensive built-in box that's not going to move with the times anyway?

That said, I'm still using an old TomTom (8 years old I think) for pleasure, not commuting, and it is only just being given a run for it's money by Samsung Navigation on a Brodit mounted Galaxy S3.

I use TomTom Android (finally) if I just need to get somewhere, I also have co-pilot (bought cos TomTom took so damn long to release on Android) which also works well but has some interesting route selections :o

Forum meets and drive days I still use my TomTom ONE v1 as it allows use of itineraries - and I know several others that wont buy new TomTom's and prefer to use Garmin because of the need for itinerary planning, so I think TomTom are definately missing a trick by excluding them....

The new ones look quite nice, and I think I'd have to go for the 6" one!

However, I won't be buying a new one until itineraries are back in - and possibly even until there's the option of importing google/tyre routes too!

Do you know if the night mode still has very bright blacks - as on the 1000/1005 even in the dimmest night setting you get quite a bright glow from the unit!

Might even just get a mount for the iPad instead :P

Not sure about "bright blacks" never found it a problem, you can turn the brightness down.

The itinerary is a good point and I will pass along

I would love to buy myself a tomtom app for the android but it's price with whole europe maps is ridicolous - you can buy a whole tomtom gps unit for less than the android app :headbang:

Brightness is on it's lowest setting, night mode is on, but when driving at night you still get a good glow from the unit as the backlighting doesn't seem to turn off.

I like my cabin to be dark when I'm driving at night as the piano black reflects every little light. Dash lights are on the lowest setting, computer/nav screen is closed, etc.

Maybe I'll just wear sunglasses instead :P

Totally agree about the itineraries. I use TomTom on my iphone in the US and UK and it's great for getting from A to B. But often I want to drive my route and there's no way of forcing the route other than putting in so many waypoints that I lose the will to live and give up! :headbang:
