New to Z4, trouble setting up blutooth on screen

Just bought a mid 2003 model Z4. It's a 3 litre Automatic in black with red leather interior and sat/nav system.

Beautiful car and loving it so far over my (about to sell) 2000 year 530i Sport.

I'm trying to pair my iPhone 3gs with the Z4 and it is not happening. I phoned Murketts BMW in Huntingdon and gave them my registration number and they confirmed that it is Blu-tooth prepped. I did this as I suspected it might not be because of the trouble I was having.

Basically, I turn the engine on, press the Menu button, and dial to Telephone. When I push the knob it says across the very top of the screen something like 'activate phone' and in each corner of the screen there is a small rectangular grey area; nothing else.

I've tried turning on my iPhone Blutooth at this point, it searches for a device i.e. the car, but can't find anything.

Am I doing something wrong?

Nigel - Welcome and gets some shots of you nice sounding Zed up on the forum.

You need to pair the phone first. Have a search on here as it's posted several times. You'll need the 4 digit pin of the bluetooth module and to set your iphone to discover.

Thanks cj

Yes, I will get some pics up, when sun comes out.

I did research for 2 hours before posting this, but my problem has not come up before.

I can't even get the car to go into paring mode, not even automatically.

On the satnav screen it simply says 'Activate Phone' when I select 'Telephone' via the menus.

The only buttons I have in the Z4 is when I fold the part down behind the arm rest, just to the front of the phone cradle there is a small ikon of a face with lines in front of it to suggest a 'talk' button? but there is no phone, just an empty tray for keeping pens etc.

Appart from that the only other button is on the dash under the CD slot with a phone ikon on it.

Thanks hutch

Yes, I've seen that link, nothing there helps.

I'm going to have to bite the bullet and pay huge BMW fee for them to hook it up to a machine and mess with firmware etc all afternoon. I'm sure I'll come out of there £500 light :(

Not even the video half way down

"How to set your BMW Bluetooth system in pairing mode short video (3MB MPEG)"

Welcome Nigel. First of all ignore the R/T button. That's just to swap between radio and telephone on the move. You'll need that 4 digit code for sure. Should be on your documents somewhere; small sticker. From memory you have to activate bluetooth on you phone and search for the card nav to pair (not sure if you've tried this already). Should link up and ask for the code. Failing that get dealer or Indy to check your firmware. Good luck!

Yes, I watched that, but I don't have a 'pairing button' as per the presenter says 'press and hold the pairing button for 3 seconds.

I have the 4 digit code.

Yes, I've turned on iPHone and switched on Blutooth, but it searches and finds nothing.

Ah, ok, paid more attention this time and held the button down for 3 seconds before turning to position one.

Came up Pairing Mode, so I kicked in bluetooth on my iPHone and it found the BMW, I put in 4 digit pin and it said 'not paired' on phone, and the circle on my iPHone just turns for ever, 5 minutes later, still not connected.

Any ideas why it won't pair?

I'm thinking it might be the phone, I'll try my Samsung in the morning; too darn cold and dark to go out there again tonight ;)

I thought there was an issue with old ULF's and iphones, but not sure what it affects, may just be phone book.

My car's the facelift, but I had some issues doing this with my Berry. The system appears to require pairing conditions, and your actions, to be perfect, or it fails. Try making sure your iPhone BT is already switched on and discoverable/in pairing mode first, then do the car sequence perhaps ? I think that's what I did with my Berry.

Keep trying it too. My iPhone 4 took a few goes before properly connecting.

When I first got my car it wouldn't pair for love nor money (nor continuous swearing, pleading and headbanging the steering wheel) I had to go through the process of deleting all of the existing paired phones from the car's memory and then it worked first time. The process is in the book.

It's an art not a science. You're getting closer.just keep trying a few different combinations of phone discoverable, turning key, holding button, etc.

I'll try that tomorrow Bing, and I'll keep trying, inkeys.

Today however, when it said 'pairing' on my iPHone, it never actually paired. But if I pressed that on the iPhone, it went blank, came back 'connected' then after 2 seconds changed to 'not connected'. I tried several times, same thing.

Sounds more like its not taking the pairing code. You are entering the pin on your phone? Could the number be wrong or do you have the proper number card.

Try pairing another phone

Also double check the pairing number for the car. Think its also printed somewhere in the footwell, although I could have dreamt that
