Dear Members,

This is my first post on this forum and although the car is fantastic to drive, I'm affraid that my first post is to do with a couple of problems.

I bought my Z4 53 plate 3.0i from BMW chandlers worthing, it came with 2 years warranty (thank goodness!!)

problem is as follows:

after driving about 150 miles on motorways, I get home and park, when I switch off the engine there is a terrible clunk and rumble from the gearbox area (oh the car is manual by the way) A little worried about that and wanted to know if that is common? it doesn't sound normal to me but this is my first z4.

Second problem, driving around town and beep yellow DSC light and Yellow brake light??? I decided to switch the engine off, when I start back up there are no lights, the two lights only pop up once Ive gove over 5 mph.

I'm quite upset that on my first day these problems have poped up, I bought from main dealer for peace of mind. Any thoughts on these problems would be of great help.

Thank you very much.

Back to the dealer mate..or call out breakdown assist and let them plug in a diagnostic and see what comes up....but things happen. If it doesn't resolve itself, reject the car....

I got mine from Chandlers Worthing too. And after less than a mile I had a fault, O2 sensor failed. No problem, got it fixed under warranty at a local dealer, all sorted, no problems since. Frustrating but don't let it spoil the experience.

The clunk sounds relatively normal.

oh dear.... :(

Thats a shame as the car is fantastic to drive. I found it a bit of a scary drive back to Hertfordshire though, so much power (I've been used to an e39 520i)

As for power, i've noticed that it seems to be down on power ever since those lights have come on

I'll be taking the car to BMW Rybrook Warwick tomorrow, the master tech is very very good indeed, I'll give you all an update when they tell me what they have found.

I'm hoping that they dont find too much wrong otherwise back it goes :(

Cheers guys :)

The clunk and rattle from the manual gearbox is fairly normal on early cars. Try turning off the engine with the clutch still depressed. I was told it was simply the driveshafts rattling against the plates.

Exactly what I was told by Synters Cardiff. Always turn off engine with clutch depressed now - worrying noise eliminated.

:)

Thank goodness I have warranty! ive been reading many posts on here, next will be the rear springs :P

I hope I don't get too much fuss with warranty though, I remember when I had 2008 120d, had to replace the whole gearbox after just one month of ownership, car had 12,000 miles. They put it through warranty without fuss.

But my fear is that my z4 is 8 years old, if, lets say for example my z4 needed a new gearbox, would that be covered?? the reason I say this is because the z4 has similar problems to the one series. its very hard to get it in gear, very very clunky, notchy, very difficult to stick in first and clonks into every gear......I suppose I could just be an awful driver :P

Hi and welcome, sorry to hear of your problems, my previous Z4 was 04 3.0SE bought at 26,000 and PX'd last month at 96,000 miles. Never noticed any noise when stopping the engine and the 6 speed gearbox was smooth to the last day in fact better than my newer 07 3.0SI with now 26,000 on the clock. I would get it checked and I am sure the warranty will cover it. Sorry it has spoiled your first drive, I would have been worried same as you.
Will be interested to hear the outcome.
