New to the Z world - Purchasing help

Good afternoon,

Firstly I'm new to the site and the world of the Z4.

My partner and I are looking to purchase a Z4 for the first time, not brand new unfortunately. We are looking at around the 2003 to 2005 era. I was hoping by posting this thread enthusiasts like yourselves would be able to give me some advice as to what to look for, what's prone to go, and what I can expect in general.

We are looking around the 75k mileage mark and the years mentioned above as this is all we have available in our budget. We can afford to maintain the car but can't afford any nasty surprises so any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks for your time in advance!

Hello and welcome Sparky
I would say that the roof motor can die on you,not that mine has but there are loads of posts on here to help you out with any problems you have and the members are very helpful.

Pretty reliable cars, common faults are the roof motor getting wet and dying and rear springs snapping. Aside from that there aren't many major faults. I would advise you to go for the 3.0 as it's not much, if any more to run than the smaller engines. Avoid the 2.0 as it tends to be less reliable.

Happy shopping!

Now then Sparky,

Welcome to the site - have a look at some of the shortcuts above and you'll learn what to look for and have in mind.

Why not be patient and see what comes up on this site for sale - a well cared for Zed with good history and full service history and possibly with a new hood motor is likely to come up from time to time.

I have a 2006 'facelift' 2.0 litre sport - I really enjoy the full performance of my four cylinder - it is very smooth and great fun to drive this way. Many forum members prefer and opt for the six cylinder 3.0 litre and it appears costs are not too different - check insurance. Tyres can be expensive but there are middle range tyres available to keep things affordable.

Make sure you think about the colour/options/spec you really want - you may have to make some compromises but when spending your money wait for what you really want.

Heated seats make sense - sport / leather seats are liked / SE version has smaller wheels and less expensive sized tyres / Sport version has staggered tyres (wider at back) and 18inch which are more expensive - sport versions can have a harsher ride than SE - see what others have said on the Forum for more advice. Some cars come with parking assist/ uprated hifi/ the Zed can be breezy with the top down so a Zed which has the optional BMW wind excluder is useful ( though I have a Perspex version costing just over £100 the BMW version is far more expensive and difficult to get so good to have one with the car you buy).

The Zeds you are after can be modified - sometimes lowered and the wheels may be uprated or changed so find out what you're looking at - that's why it might be useful buying from a forum member - though some cars are advertised by newbies - so all rules of car purchase still apply - take care.

Getting your Zed serviced at a specialist garage rather than a BMW dealership is far cheaper - such a service stamp at the age you are looking to buy will be ok. My specialist likes the Z4 and services it for £200 and I trust his judgement and work.

I traded up from an MX5 and have not regretted it - I feel I am driving a far more special and focussed car - its great and you'll love it

BUT it does take some getting used to and you'll enjoy getting to know it's capabilities - most members change to non runflat tyres as the car does tend to tramline and follow cambers and faults in the road on runflats (as well as creating quite a harsh ride).

There are lots of forum members that have more knowledge than me but I was in your position a couple of years ago and made some elemental mistakes and could have done with getting info from this site before I purchased my Zed - no regrets though its been brilliant for the last 18 months. Its a very special car and so is the Forum - when you get one come along to he runs and meets - its a great group.

Best of luck with your search - there are plenty out there - be patient and the right Zed will come your way and you'll see what all the fuss is about!

:driving:

No mention of budget but member "Jembo" is making noises about selling his 2005 3.0Se , , looks a well looked after Z delight 8)

Most things have been covered above- welcome along, post any pics/ads of cars you are considering as I am sure you will be given good advice.

something like this would be a good starting base - photos terrible but if service history is in order it is a car with a lot of desirable options in a good colour conbo with sports seats

Carol - you did it for me - thanks

Posted this on another thread but maybe it's more suited to this one so here it is again.

If you were buying today what would be the better buy in terms of the 3.0 engine between pre/post models?
Concentrating purely on the power and torque differences and not options between the two models.

What would it be?

Oh and if it was the auto box.

Ladies and gents thank you very much for all of your input, fantastic help, advice and links on here. Appreciate such a warm welcome from everyone.mi look forwards to purchasing my first z4 and becoming a regular forum member,

Many thanks again!

What are people's opinions on this example

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/bmw/z4-roadster/2003-z4-2-5i-fully-loaded-75-000-miles/1620612

I viewed the car yesterday and it looked fantastic, FSH, oil change due which the owner was prepared to do inc in the price. Drove lovely, no knocking or whining noises. Roof motor has recently been reconned. Run flats removed and falken's pit in place. Cruise, heated seats, electric mirrors, cd changer. The gentleman selling had recently purchased an '06 Z4 and now wants to move this one on ASAP. OriginAlly on piston heads at 5k. I believe the rear springs are original. Bad bits... Headlights are 'weather worn' and just need G3 and a mop, very very tiny bumper paint scuff at the rear, looks like maybe a shopping trolly has brushed it. All round I was amazed by the fantastic condition of this car but it is the first I've seen so I'm bound to think that. I must add the leather looked only a week old from the factory, i couldnt belive it had been sat in for 10 yrs. I'm wondering what the enthusiasts and knowledgable people think. Is there better out there or as far as 'price value' goes is this a winner?

One odd thing that happened which I'm not sure what to make of... After taking the car out for 10 minutes and parking back up I could here a spitting noise, when looking under the car I could see a liquid dripping onto the exhaust and steaming. Roughly one drip every 2 seconds. When looking under the car from the line where the passenger door and wing meet I could see the end of a black plastic panel that sat under the engine and then the exhaust was visible heading towards the back of the car. It was roughly 4" after this panel end that the drip was landing. The gentleman moved that car out and we inspected a small spot on the floor, it defiantly wasn't oil but could maybe of been coolant? He said he'd washed the car the day before and maybe it was water sat but we had just driven then car. A friend of mine said it could of been air on and I did run this BEFORE it was driven for 60 seconds. I'm wondering what people's opinions on this are, does the air on do that on this car or should I maybe be cautious of a problem to come.

Not to knock the car at all because other than that in my opinion it was beautiful and I'm maybe just over worrying a bit. All credit to the owner as it really looked like his pride and joy!
