New *to me* 2006 3.0i - General Questions

Good morning everyone,
I just bought a 2006 3.0i with around 90,000 miles on it. I have never owned a BMW before and want to ask a number of questions. I am fairly mechanically inclined and want to do as much myself as possible but by no means, mechanic status hence many of the questions!

  1. Getting a new car to me, what should immediately done? Typically I would change the oil but the sticker shows it still has about 5K to go. It is a manual, shifts just fine but should I change out the transmission oil? Also with the car on but not moving, when pushing in the clutch, you can hear it. Should I be looking at something? I've only owned one manual and never any issues with it.
  • Is there general maintenance for the top? It's an actual manual top so I don't have to worry about the poorly located top motor but didn't know if there was any conditioning/protective treatment to do as I have never owned a convertible?
  • For the adjustment of the side mirrors, one button doesn't work. I read somewhere to take that module out and clean the bottom with alcohol first. Any other suggestions?
  • On first start up, for about 5 seconds it almost sounds like it could die and you can watch the RPM fluctuate just a bit. Of course when I test drove it, it did not do that. Should I be concerned about this?
  • I have air leaks for sure and read this post Is this what everyone suggests doing? Without going to the car and looking at this in detail, not sure I completely understand what plate they are talking about? Nor the screws everyone says to be careful with.
  • The seal around the windshield, driver side looks like it should be folded together but now kind of looks like an accordion. I need to take a photo to better explain myself. Anyone know off hand what to do?
  • I know I said I am mechanically inclined so I feel foolish even posting this but it is a real question, I cannot get the oil cap off. Is there a trick? The corner looks like maybe you need to do something with it but I had no luck. (see picture)
  • On closer inspection under the hood, wasps (bees) built their home in here right under the wiring that leads to the fuse box. Best way to remove without messing anything up? (See picture)
  • I've looked at installing an aftermarket radio that allows apple play etc. This car is equipped with the GROM so I can bluetooth in currently. Seems like messing with the radio is a PIA. I've read this post and have installed a new head unit in almost every vehicle I have ever owned but like I said, never owned a BMW. Worth it?
  • Wind shield - worth buying one?
  • The passenger airbag light next to the shifter remains blinking. I put the key into the airbag on/off on the side of console on the passenger side and nothing shut that blinking light off. There are no dash lights. What's up with this?

Anything else that I should be aware of? Any cheaper cools mods? I do have an appointment next week for a muffler delete. Much appreciated!!

Looks more like a 3.0si, quite an important difference. N52 engine.

Change it anyway. The BMW service intervals are far too long imho. Google Mike Miller for his BMW servicing guide.

Yes, as above.

Rotate counterclockwise about 45 degrees then lift up from the corner opposite to the hinge, the cap is captive.

Agree on changing the oils in both engine and gearbox, add the diff to that as well, then you know for sure whats in there. As to air leaks, if you can't find any holes or splits then a surefire way to find them is a smoke test. Very important to ensure the vaccum syatem on all these BMW's is a sealed system, air leaks anywhere across the engine will affect fuel trims. Good diagnostics kit is essential, go for something that will display live data as well as fault codes and airbag codes. Creator 310+ is in my kit and works very well in scanning and clearing faults on all modules in the car. If you want to go down the Laptop route then BMW INPA and or BMW Scanner 1.4 are the way to go.

The window is not tight to the seal on the backside of the window. Pretty sure that is where the link is on both driver and passenger side.

What engine oil, transmission oil and diff do you recommend?

It is the N52 but I def bought a 3.0i :)

Yip, definitely a 3.0Si as that’s what N52’s are. A 3.0i is a completely different engine

Umm you understand this engine was in both the 3.0i and 3.0 si right (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_N52)? I have a 3.0i, but that was not in any of my questions above. Your image (black) you posted is pre-facelift - easy spot as it has an oil dipstick. Mine is a 2006. Thanks for trying to help.

Let me state, I live in the states :)

Oil cap, really won't come off. It is built in two pieces and BOTH pieces spin which I am guessing the bottom part is not supposed to? Suggestions?

This is the windows are the top priority as I just washed it and water comes in where it isn't tight.

That's probably what has thrown us as most of us are in the UK, and we only ever got the N52 engine as a 3.0Si.

For the oil cap the bottom part shouldn't turn - is there any way you can wedge the bottom part somehow so you can undo the cap? It might be worth having a new one before you remove it as getting that one back in place might be difficult.

Good luck getting those niggles sorted.

What evil in the USA crippled the N52 with such a monstrosity of a model?!

Forget everything else and unleash your motor! Intake/DISA and DME flash are probably the only difference?

Has anyone used this product to maintain seals for top? https://www.amazon.com/nextzett-91480615-Gummi-Pflege-Rubber/dp/B004B8GTQG

If not, what is recommended?

303 or chemical guys to protect the soft top? Also, for cleaning the top, I have seen videos on folks using all-purpose cleaner, chemical guys top cleaner, or a number of different product. What does everyone use? I have a black top and across one bar there is definitely discoloration.
