New to BMW with Z4?

1997 - '88 Ford Escort, 1.4 GL (gold!) - first car, the paint held the rust together in a vague escort-shaped mass. epic adventures!
1999 - '99 Ford Fiesta, 1.25 Zetec - was a little go kart, had an engine management problem so rejected under sale of goods...
2000 - '00 Ford Fiesta, 1.4 Ghia - higher spec, comfy and quicker but softer suspension so body roll on cornering wasn't as nice
2003 - '03 Ford Focus 1.6 Ebony - brilliant car. really good spec, would be destroyed in a straight line but on really twisty roads it was awesome
2010 - '03 BMW Z4 3.0i SE - love the balance between the power and the handling, and open-top driving rocks!

2003 Citroen Saxo 1.4 Furio (2000 W) Bit chavy but fun none the less! Was mango too!

2007 Mazda RX8 231 (2004 04) Loved this car!
2009 Ford Mondeo ST TDCI (2006 56) Needed diesel due to 100 mile daily commute
2011 BMW Z4 2.0 (2006 55) Still have the commute but wanted some fun back!
All well with the BMW so far, would consider another next too.

March 1983 and I pass my test after 4 lessons (lots of delinquent 'banger' racing over the fields before this)
1983 - Renault 14 GTS (with a cloth roof so semi-convertible)
1984 - VW Sirrocco GTi (lovely car that I bought because I loved the single front wiper)
1985 - Seat Ibiza GTS? First brand new car and an absolute pile o steaming do-do 'porsche system' indeed.
1986 - Peugeot 1.6 GTi OMG I thought the Sirrocco was fun, this car left it for dead; more fun than a free brothel...
1989 - Renault 19 16v Thought it was time to get a more 'refined' fast car (great until late for a ferry & the sunroof exited the car at 120 on the M20...)
- MG Midget, first proper convertible as a Summer car. An absolute money pit and the tin worm got it in the end.
1994 - Toyota Celica GT Loved the lines of this car and all these years later it's still my daily drive. (Apparently Toyota don't make 'em like this anymore)
2004 - Series 1 Lotus Elise IIIs - I loved the looks of the Elise from day one and it took me about 3 years to find the one I wanted. A love affair from the first drive.
2008 - BMW X5, sensible family wagon for the brood.
2011 - Missing the Elise and looking for a 'sensible' replacement, so a Zed is in the frame.

I am genuinely surprised how 50/50 this is...I thought i was in a significant minority (er, 'scuse the oxymoron!) in the Zed being my first BMW.
As an aside...used the Zed for a couple country road blasts recently and I so love this car...! It honestly gets better every week I own it.

D3 as a repmobile/ daily driver is close to perfection. HOw is is going up and down the gears all the time? Does it run out of puff/ sound awfull at 4000 rpm?

No it's absolutely fine, plenty if torque, not much point in revving past 4000 but it will go to 4500, love 2nd and 3rd gear, only had a couple of flat out drives on my way to Germany last year and it was great, most of the time I'm on a motorway with the cruise on at 70mph :wink: and achieving 40+ mpg
The zed was my first BMW, and have to say I'm thoroughly enjoying the ownership experience (with the exception of a particular dealer who damaged the car). From the experience I'd happily buy another BMW.
That said.... I once had a 1.4l Pug 306 which was good fun, and I expected to buy another Pug after that (specifically a 306 GTi or XSi). The daily 'will it/won't it' routine of driving it and expecting it to cut out soon put pay to that idea though. Had worked fine for months, then for the next 6-9 months I spent half my evenings out under that bonnet and never did find the source of the problem. Some dodgy electrics somewhere. Fingers crossed the Z4 will never leave me waiting for a flat-bed to take me home.
Since there's lists going...

1989 Volvo 340 1.7 GL (yaay, RWD and crap handling as a learner)
1994 Pug as despised/described above.
1994 Mondeo Si 2.0 (had RS bodykit, generally 'boy-racered')
2000 Mondeo ST200 2.5 V6 (sounded beautiful when floored)
and at the same time...
1998 Ford Puma 1.7 (most fun car per pound spent I've ever owned - including the Z4)
Both replaced by...
2006 Focus 1.6 Ghia (shopping trolley) and...
2007 Z4C (saves the best till last).
