New thermostat fitting, use gasket sealant or not.

I’ve noticed the new febi thermostat I fitted after engine refresh is still weeping slightly from the lower bolt area after tightening the bolt as tight as I dare go,so obviously I’m going to whip it off to investigate further.
So to use gasket sealant or not that is the question?

I was ok as far as I remember,will investigate further tonight,i need to replace blue radiator drain plug anyway so will drain coolant again,it’s probably been flushed and changed more times in 3 months than in the last 19 years.
 
Check out the cavity where those O rings seat for corrosion they should be sealing the coolant in there, check they were not damaged when you installed the pump, some silican spray on them may have helped them home when you put it in and lessen the risk of damage to them. If they are the cause I don't think sealant on the mating faces would last long before it starts leaking again.

I didn't use a sealant and it didn't leak.

I did clean the mating face though, as while I couldn't see any leaks externally the block had some corrosion suggesting it had been leaking for a while very slightly.
 
Luckily I spotted this weeping whilst I had the undertray off fixing broken headlight bracket,it’s so slight I never would have noticed it.
Job will need to wait for tomorrow evening now got the call from my customs agent,thanks webuyanycar.com for another low valuation 👍will pick up some bits I ordered also from main dealer in Toulouse.
 
The thermostat mating face on the engine block needs to be immaculate like this. Use a plastic scraper and fine steel wool if necessary. Avoid emery cloth etc as it can leave fine scratches/score marks that can weep. Presume you torqued everything down correctly ? :thumbsup: 20181113_113313.jpg

If anything I’ve over torqued it now.
