Ive just ordered a set of Michelin PS5 for the 35is
I’ve kept to the same width front and rear but gone 5% up on profile ie 225 /40/19 and 255/35/19

Now I’m wondering how or if this will affect my Insured warranty?

If anyone wants a pair of std Potenza runflats (225/35/19) that have not been driven over a kerb and with 6mm of tread, drop me a message!

I shouldn`t think so but always best to inform them . Plus you get peace of mind

Technically you’ve changed the car from its published design criteria so that’s a definite requirement to inform them…what their response is up to them..

The new rubber is fitted and the car feels very very different!

I will get a few miles into them before pushing on. The steering input at very low speeds seems much lighter, driving at normal speed the steering weight feels no different.

The previous run flats are ok but I was horrified at the condition inside the rear tyres (near side and off side) the inner wall on both tyres have a continuous split around the circumference roughly where the side wall meets the tread area - it looks like the tyre has been used flat - it has not
A visual inspection would have given the thumbs up as there is no visible damage on the outside.

I find that disturbing as last week I was doing motorway speeds for three hours continuously.

Welcome to the enlightened club…it’s the single biggest chassis change you can do on an E89…

The issue with your rear tyres is that you haven’t driven around enough corners hard enough to even up the wear…

E89s carry so much rear camber that if you just drive in straight lines then the rear shoulders always wear badly..

You can tell from multiple MOTs what type of driving has been done based on exactly that scenario..

Looking forward to my usual drive to the Borders next week

I will be more than happy to eat my large slice of humble pie. I used to think the RF were ok (ish) so prepare the custard!


The RF on the Z4 have some scary circumferential internal splits
The 335 had two tyres that developed blebs long before worn

The tyres have never been mistreated ie always properly inflated and never driven on or off kerbs

Very poor quality.

I connected bmw insured warranty and they said that they were not bothered about the fitting of non runflats - however if the 5% Profile had affected an insured component at a claim, then it would not be covered. I asked for an example and they couldn’t give me such an example.

Their suggestion was to ask my local dealership if a 5% increase was acceptable. Basically they have put the onus on the dealership to make a decision for them which I don’t think is very fair.

Until the service manager contacts me I would say that’s a definite maybe!
