new roof motor labeled wrong?

20 mins, is this worth a meet then im wondering?? thats mega quick and seems really beneficial for a novice and some pocket money your way?

Hi,

Am complete noobie on this site. Picked up my Z4 on Saturday, and the roof motor has gone. Where did you guys get your motor from (in the UK). Does it have to be dealer or do other places sell it?

Cheers.

dont know about your question, but welcome to the forum :D

shame about the introduction to ownership being the roof motor going - not the best of starts :(

thanks for the welcome gannet.

As you say, not the best intro to Z4 ownership, but I hope to get it resolved asap so I can enjoy the wonderful British summer (although very gloomy today) with the roof down.

I checked ebay, and can't see any motor's for the Z4 there.

cheers

Nope I check eBay for 4 weeks and nothing the cheapest is from a dealer with 15% discount as a forum member you will also need the insulation so it's £259 and £55 I think Inc the discount and vat that's the cheapest!! Where bouts are you?

I am in Leicester. Local Dealer is Sytner - so I guess I call them up. Do I ask for a roof motor, or is there a part number? I hear that the post 05 models had a sealed motor - did you purchase that one, or get one of the unsealed varieties?

BTW -looking for shipkillers instructions on his shipkiller site, but the site is unavailable - anyone else got a set of instructions?

Cheers.

Here is the link for replacing the roof motor......

Another link for the parts......

The latst version of the pump is I belive sealed to prevent the problems of the original, so go with the updated version.

Yea I think you have to go through sytner woman on here I'll dig out the details, pm me to remind me, wouldn't mind coming to Leicester to see how you get on removing the roof?

if you look on my thread called new or old motor it has the part numbers needed on there..

you will need the motor, sound insulation as yours will be soaked, some cable ties, fabric tape, and silicone gunk.

Tool wise you need a socket set, a set of T's , and screwdrivers.
I'll be making a more photo friendly guide as some of shipkillers parts I found very hard to follow, but you'll have to wait as I'm off home to Thailand for a month.

no zed driving for me, back to the hilux

Thanks AlanJ and KoolChris.

Am looking to do the fix soon (well depending on when I can get the motor and set some time). I went through shipkillers instructions, and some bits are a bit confusing, but am thinking it is only when I start the job, the various bits will make sense.

cheers

Just spoke to an indie beemer mechanic about repair. He'd done a couple of others. Was booked for Tuesday but got a call yesterday to say he couldnt get a new motor :( . Apparently they are on back order in Germany. Looks like loads are failing.

Nice bit of cash for BMW for the motors that they badly designed in the first place!

If anyone knows where there might be some in stock would be glad to hear!

it does look like they are all failing about now on the 03/04 cars, I presume next year the 04/05 cars will start failing...

The motor I just ordered through BMW so you'll just have to wait for your stealer to get one for you.. mine took 2 days.

well, just ordered my parts so hopefully it will all go well this weekend. so in regaurds to the new motors which are labelled differently, do i ignore the new labelling and use the old labelling?

Note: Just had an email saying they are on back order. Neither BMW UK or BMW AG have them. Anyone know of anyone with stock?

Chased my indie called the other day, said BMW (in Germany) had delayed a day. Then called back yesterday (bit knarked having to call him all the time when I had asked him to keep me updated!). He called up BMW parts, called me back, now saying September. Great. And even that's not a guarantee as the queue will be getting larger and larger. :headbang:

How are they making these flippin things, by hand from rare stones? It's obviously a fault they were aware of, that's why they changed the motor type. And with 03's and 04's getting to a decent few years of use it was fairly obvious this was going to happen.

German efficiency my arse.

Decided to give the company that makes the pumps a try, Heorbiger (try and say that when you've had a couple!). No dice.

They don't want to piss off BMW by selling outside of them (can you imagine the mark-up Beemer are putting on these). To be fair he was pretty honest about the reasons why. I also asked when they would get the supply to BMW, but he dodged the question saying: "I am not at all involved with the automotive parts, these are all supplied from Germany, so I have no idea as to the reliability of their latest delivery date." :headbang:

Might email him back and say 'so you cant just ask them then? You know, these people IN THE SAME COMPANY AS YOU.'

If anyone wants to hit them with a group buy offer, or even just a pretty please with a cherry on top, the UK guy is [email protected]. But he was as much use as a chocolate fireguard to be honest.

Oh well worth a try I guess! :(

Well, finally me and my friends did the change on the motor, and thought I would post the pics of the motor condition.
the new motor by the way was the same as the old one.

Herrow,

half way (i hope) though my roof motor change.

Just a quick question, my old motor had the hydro pipes going in one way, (12 14 on the right, 11 13 on the left)

on the new motor they are switched? is this right? or should i put them in as on the old one?

i.e on my new motor, these two below are the other way round it says..

Ahhh! I am so confused, my new motor also has this issue 12 14 and 11 13 have swapped sides!!!

Ignore the new numbering, put the pipes in the same location as they were on the old pump. I know it works, I had to do this when I changed my roof motor on my last car. If you put the hydraulic pipes to suit the new numbering the roof will work in reverse until it meets the switches, and then lock up in fault meaning you can't move it again, Plus the roof will have to come out again to change them back.

Thanks so much for the quick reply! Will do this now and report back in a few hours. Also going to post some pics of my old motor. I can't believe just how bad it looks!
