new roof motor failed

Hi has anyone ever heard of a brand new roof motor failing within a 3 week period ?

my "new" roof motor appears to have done just that and is now getting another "new" one

im a little peeved as the invoice is for supply at £350 and fit at £400 ish which is how much a new one costs

supply and fitted by the garage - they have the car and are replacing it - (and whilst we haven't explicitly discussed - i wont be paying anything) but im a bit worried that i may be getting another crappy / old motor

If they bought a new motor from BMW then it will have a 2 year parts warranty. If they refurbed yours then refitted it then they ripped you off. Make sure you ask to see the old motor if possible. As for labour... Tricky I guess - if it was BMW then all the work would be warrantied. Unless they warrantied it then they may well try to charge you the labour citing the failure as 'not their fault'. I'd prepare yourself to be polite and firm when getting the car back

not sure either - i suppose if they guarantee it for the same 2 years that a new part is guaranteed for ...

The parts guarantee is the parts guarantee - shouldn't be an issue with that, even if they did rip you off at first and have to get a new one you shouldn't be charged for it, in theory, if they want to cover their tracks. Not saying they have by the way, components do fail occasionally despite being new, hence warranties in the first place. Hope the conversation goes the right way

if they try to charge me labour for re fitting - i will demand to see the original invoice to them for a new pump, and if this one works properly, then fine, but I'm not super confident

this is the same garage that after fitting the roof pump, tried to look at the DSC unit and didnt connect it up properly leaving me with no power steering, servo'd brakes or speedo - (yes i know) unfortunately it all happened at the same time, needless to say, my recommendation is to avoid

I would have thought that if BMW new part failed , then the garage's claim for re fit time is with BMW

Hi, Blackpool... is my home town. I always use a local BMW Indi "Autotecnik" always had great service from them, hope its not them as the service you have had to date sound v poor. If it is a straight 2nd Motor failure, then I would not expect to have to pay anything... three weeks after replacement.

Hi Maxam - i wonder how far apart we are - this garage is autotecnik - behind b+q - id heard good things about them, but i'm less confident now

hopefully tomorrow i will collect my car and it will have a marvelous roof motor - with a lovely new 2 yr warranty - the thing that they fitted was noisy and got slower and slower to close until it took 3 resets of the key to get it to close

Chris, yep that the garage I always use.. and to be fair they have always been right on the ball with me. As I said I would not expect to have to pay anything and I would not expect to have to fight about it... They are after all a BMW Indi. I guess things can go wrong, interested to see if they cause you any hassle over it, or are just happy to put things right.

Just had mine replaced 12 months after a new one was fitted! not 3 weeks but does show they are weak point that could go after any time period

update on this Autotecnik tried a new pump which didnt work - and they now say its a leak in the system somewhere

im pleased that they fitted a new pump and they sourced another new one - lets see how this gets resolved

Well - it turned out that the system needed bleeding - and now it is as sweet as a nut!

panic over - new roof motor working lovely - ready for the weekend

Autotecnik didn't charge extra, which given that they shelled out on a second new motor and had the car 3 days, is not so bad at all.
