New rear tyres in 3 days, how many wheel spin starts before?

I've had the car 3 months now & put on 1,000 miles.
When I bought it, the price agreed was reflected by the fact I knew the rear tyres would need replacing in the time frame it has taken.

The current rears on the passenger side have hit the block (1.6mm) on the inside and are just under 3mm on the outside.
The previous owner picked up an unrepairable puncture on the drivers side rear not long after the pair went on hence the tyre on my drivers rear is sitting at about 4mm all across.

So, the ///M in 3 days gets it new rear boots.

I hate throwing away something which has life left in it! But, I don't want to bring the 4mm tyre home (as a spare)

So the way I look at it is let's have some fun with the rears before they hit the tyre fitters bin!

Now I'm 39 years old guys. (I'm not a Chav boy racer!) but I feel this is the time to burn some rubber!

Gotta find me some unused country roads to do this!

The question is how many tyre smokin starts (with traction control off) and for how long do you think I've got to do in the next few days? To bring down the tread on the 4mm rear to make me feel happier binning it!

the question is what road will you drive down with a really long left hand bend only, so you wear down the drivers side more? :P
 
Good point about the clutch! Hadn't thought about that!

How about some big remote Tarmac area.....and practice some donuts!

God, now I am sounding like a chav!

It might be easier to just accept I'm binning a half used tyre
 
I would rather bin a useless tyre in a way then stressing components, which is why I would never buy a car that has been on a track as I have seen the damage caused by that.
 
I would keep it, You might think about getting a second set of wheels for winter use in the future, it could come in handy. Or as said flog it on ebay. And as said, the stress you would put on the other related components by doing a few burn outs is'nt worth it.
 
When the new ones are on! I'll be trying to maximise there life, I'm that sort of driver in general and nothing has changed since owning the ///M. I mean I'll be looking for 10-15,000 miles out of the rears which would last me 3-4 years.
Haven't had the traction control off the motor yet & haven't taken it anywhere near the red line. (even though the engine is meant to be driven like that).

I'm purely talkin about a few quick wheel spins off the line a few days before new boots go on. I'm not talkin about leavin 50ft black lines!

That said, my sensible head will probably win as always!......quite like the eBay option.

meh, ignore the sense and get it sideways.. 4mm is agessss to burn off :driving:

the experience will give you a very healthy respect for the utter madness this car is capable of 8)
 
Why would you punish your Z and fine engine, just because you have some tread left on the tire?

Each to their own but my advice is ignore the killjoys and go do a few donuts in a car park or a deserted roundabout somewhere, more fun and no clutch burning! Alternatively if you really want to learn something and do it in a safe (and legal environment) take the car to Andy Walsh and do a car limits day with him. Plenty of space to do what you like and you'll have much more control and respect for the car by the end of it.

I'm surprised how people can own a car that demands to be driven hard and then exercise extreme caution all the time. Pretty dull advice people :roll:

Get out there and enjoy the car, you've nothing to worry about.
 
Im with TJ here. Have fun with the car and get it on a track.

You dont watch Top Gear and think oooo that cant be good for the car i wish he'd stop. Memories are worth more than the car. :thumbsup:
 
Agree with having fun with it (otherwise whats the point? go buy a golf or something)

Be careful not to overdo it, Clarkson regularly has a blowout... Don't risk damaging those shiny wheels!
 
Well, New rear tyres fitted today.

NO... I didnt go burning rubber for the last 3 days, or finding a car park for donuts.
NO... I didnt bring the tyre home with some tread on it. (in actual fact it was lower than I thought, wouldnt of been worth cluttering the garage)

But I have had a result.

Cheapest supplied & fitted Conti Sport Contact M3 i found online were £198 each

However, my mate at work (with a mate) sourced me the tyres fitted locally all in for £183 each.
Then 'good ol dad' came up trumps by putting them through his company, so no VAT for me to pay.

Meaning the Z4M is sat on the drive with tyres that cost me £157 each........RESULT
