New rear speakers

Fitted some new rear speakers cos I was not happy with the wooden sounding standard ones (basic system). What a difference, the sound now is much better, more depth and clarity the set up now sounds much better balanced. Left the small 4" ones in the bulkhead, removed the cubby holes and made 2 pieces of mdf to mount the speakers 6 1/2" dia bolted the board to the cubby hole and presto.Running the cables wasnt too bad either they tucked up under the transmission tunnel trim. As I already had the speakers the total cost was £15 for the cable.Well happy.

Sounds good. I fancy doing this also as the cubby holes seem pretty pointless and are dust magnets.

I'm with you on that!!

If you buy the BMW big speakers do they just wire into the head unit does anyone know??

@Darren, if you're referring to the sub-woofers used in upgrade systems, no, they require a separate amplifier to drive them.

Thankyou bcworkz, as you can tell my stereo knowledge is limited to say the least

The amp fits nicely next to the battery. I am not sure what stereo system I have but it good enough or me. It hides lots of the squeaks and rattles ( must fix some of them ) Can't see why you couldn't retrofit?

I think I will retrofit, shouldn't be too expensive, I'll keep an eye out on eBay for some cubbyhole speakers

Fingers crossed the wiring might be there?
You'll be lucky, its not too bad a job to get the speaker cables from head unit to cubby though.

@goon, I have nothing to gain by you answering the following question (have upgrade system), I'm just curious. Which outputs did you wire your new speakers to?

As I have a non standard jvc head unit it has a higher power out put than the BMW one,I took the rear output cable pins out of the adaptor harness and connected them directly to the new cables Ihad run to the speakers. So the standard fit speakers are no longer used just the new ones and it certainly has a cleaner sound to it,I could have used 6x9 speakers but I already had a pair of 6" at home anyway. It really is a cheap and simple upgrade for us basic system peasants. :D

Couldnt find speaker grills on ebay so ordered them at the dealer £60,should finish the job nicely.
