New purchase regrets ?

I absolutely love my ///M to bits, everything about it, as some of you know my previous car was a modified 1980's 911, a car that I had coveted from being 7, finally got one when I was 34 and thought it was a "keeper" but once I decided to sell it my choice was a Boxster S or the ///M, so glad I went for the ///M, this is my "keeper" now!!

I'm 46 and when I go into the garage for something I always lift the cover up and have a look, even if it's just the wing or front end, I feel like I did when I was 7 again :)

However I scared myself the second day when overtaking a lines of cars on a run to the coast. At more or less legal speed I crossed the crown of the road and the car darted straight for the kerb. I'd never known anything tramline like this thing and the ride on 18s is pretty crap as you all know. The roads in our neck of the woods are fairly diabolical. I don't live near Scunthorpe and the roads for the test drive were fairly good.

I'm leaving it on run flats until we've taken it to France for the holiday, then we'll see. We'll take it on track at Blyton Park in the spring.

Ditch the RFTs, seriously the best mod you can make it will be a different car

In january 2010 I crashed my E46. My friend suggested a Z4. I said no way. I always thought they look ugly. I had an E24 (BMW 635 CSi) from 1990 to 2009 and after that the E46 (BMW 323i cabriolet). So I kind of liked the "old models" and thought that the Z4 was too modern.

Anyway, remembering his comment how great they are I googled it and found this forum. I read ALL discussions: general, how-to, problems... I sucked the information and I started to love them.

I saw (my Z) it once in the dealer. Didn't test drive it. I opened the passenger door and looked inside. Didn't even sit. A month later, in april 2010 my friend bringed it to me. So I payed before testing. I loved it and I still do :) !
No regrets  .

I slept a few hours in mine once... once exactly comfortable, but it was better than falling asleep while driving it :D

I sold my 650 sport, only 3 months old for a RRS, which I lved, but when the BMW went, I was in for a big shock! But then I thought I'd made a big mistake selling the Range for the Z. I missed the height and comfort, but now I love my Z, and have come close to changing it for two other cars last year, but glad I stayed with the brand and the car!!

When I saw you posted, gannet - I assumed you would be opening your heart about the mistake you made bying that Citroen :poke:

I hope not, but would be a far sight better than an overnight Virgin flight across the pond!

I always seem to suffer from post purchase guilt on high value items and the Zed was no exception. Didn't take long to get over it though. :driving:

+1. I remember looking out my window the morning after I bought the Z4 and thinking...I actually bought that work of art! What have I gotten myself into... Based on what I read about the Z4, I felt comfortable enough to take a chance on my first BMW, but was worried about maintenance and repair costs. Thankfully, 19 months later, I've only had to change 1 xenon bulb (warranty item), third brake light lens (warranty item), the oil, brake pads, and brake rotors ("discs" for those of you in Ol' Blighty). So, it has turned out to be a reliable car just like any other, only I purposely take the long way home any chance I get. I never did that in previous vehicles.

I'd go so far as to call it practical. Good gas mileage, large trunk space for a convertible 2 seater (eat your heart out, E89), and easy to park in tight spaces. I should mention that I still have my SUV for the rare times when I need to haul more cargo (people or stuff) than the Z4 can hold. But such is, like I said, a rare event.

As much as the mc is an amazing car and fills you with joy every time you even look at it, with children I realise it wasn't the most practical car for me to have bought.seem to spend most of my time driving the wife's Nissan.
Might have to px for something like an m3 :(

I sold 2 bikes R1200ST, Husky sm610 and a car 1957 speedster replicar to buy the Zed for our move to Germany. No regrets. I do miss the husky 610 hooligan bike though. I do not miss the the speedster at all. Not because it was a bad car. But because I went crazy on the motor. Had a 2.3 litre type one bug engine built. It was really hotted up. 170HP/173 torques. It was all ways needing to be fiddled with. carb sync, constant valve adjustments. And it ran hotter than hell. As I lived in a place that had reg summer temps of 38.

I bought mine brand new! Year of production july 2008. It is a 3.0 si, spent a fortune for it in my opinion and had newer any regreted!

I LOVE my 2007 2.0i M-Sport roadster!!!
My other half has a Mini Cooper, so the Z4 is a weekend car as I walk to work, so its really just a toy, a weekend car and kept under a cover. People have asked me “Why didn’t you just get a 3.2 ZM?” and I have often dwelled on this thought.

Currently im paying £355 a year for insurance for both of us, Fully comp, protected sizzle and all that, and driven conservatively I can get 33-35mpg, but is that a real concern if its a weekend car, i generally DONT drive it conservatively.

One of my mates, and a work colleague have E46 M3 which are awesome cars, but they have had no end of issues with them, and simple issues, like a warped brake disk cost more then double for parts. Which put me off getting the ZM, my thinking is that the 2.0 is not bullet proof but its a solid engine and mass produced with a abundance of cheap new and used parts out there

I have driven a couple of ZM’s and its a awesome car! Once round a track and another time for a hours test drive. Realistically though, if I want to ‘ragg’ my 2.0lt about a bit, it will go! I can still spin up the back end on a round-about, I can still break the speed limit, and drive it through the gears to the red line and its feels super quick and racey due to the stiff M-Sports suspension, its very light and stiff, its not a Slow car at all. But if I wanted something more racey I would have got a TVR.

I do plan to change the bumper, bonnet and wheels to the ZM spec, so you could say “Why not just buy a ZM?”, hmm this has crossed my mind, but totally NO REGRETS at all, I Love it!!

So NO

Loved mine from the begining, got thr GF seal of approval so the deal wes done.....Only down side is the cost of insurance other than that more than happy ....Found the BMW strut brace helped with the run flats till they wear out :D

I always get big anxiety and regret on the run-up to big purchases & the Z4 was no different. First day I picked it up I thought it was awesome, but when I got out of the town and could give it the beans I was very disappointed with the power. Previous car had a 2.2 diesel, slightly less hp but a lot more torque and when it came to actual driving it destroyed the Z4 in terms of straight-line. Then came the mpg which was and is imho atrocious when compared to the sixes - the combined figure must have come from running the car downhill.

However, the Z4 is more than just the engine - and as a car I have never been happier. I've driven a few cars, been in many more and none can give me the pleasure the Z4 can. It's mechanical, it's raw (pipe down Lotus / Caterham owners!) and it's utterly intoxicating. I feel 'at one' with the Z4 that I just don't get in other cars. They have stupid electric indicator stalks, steering with no feel and all sorts of other annoying gadgets that distance you from the whole act of driving. The Z4 has just the right amount of aids to hide the boring stuff (wipers / lights) and keeps out of the way for the real stuff (steering / gear change). I've driven around Europe and the way it eats up miles for breakfast while keeping you relaxed is utterly bewildering.

However, for the latter half of my trip I was browsing classifieds for cars with more power & torque at the hotel. I was really, really missing power on some mountain passes and especially the German Autobahns. When I got back I test drove a hot hatch with a lot more poke than my Z4 and it felt awful. The salesman was clearly surprised when I didn't rate it at all 'everyone loves these'. The quickest way to appreciate a Z4 is to drive a supposedly 'good' car back to back with the Z4.

So this is a roundabout way of saying I don't regret buying a Z4 at all. I do regret getting a 2.0 instead of a 3.0, something I shall hopefully be rectifying soon...
