New project...

So a quick update.. car is booked in for a full wrap in a couple of weeks :)

So re the paint problems, multiple places basically suggested a full respray rather than tackling individual panels but after speaking to a few wrapping places too, thats what I've gone for instead. Using 3M Fiery Orange it should be pretty close to original Valencia - comes with a good warranty and obviously a huge chunk cheaper than paint.

Top surface of the paint is all fine, so vinyl should still affix fine and it won't cause any further damage incase I do want to sort a respray much further down the line.

Pics incoming mid July 8)

If it’s just the roof bonnet and boot lid that need doing why would they suggest a full respray? How much is the full wrap costing? Last time I checked a full wrap was coming to around 3 to 4K, I am pretty sure for that money you can get a quality full respray done or better still drive it down to here and get it done for around 2k!

Did you speak to BMW regarding it being covered under warranty?

From memory they only honour such things if you have a FMDSH. If this has sat for 3/4 years then the time based servicing will have been missed which will act as a getout for them.

Nope, had my front roof panel repaired (paint damage due to bubbling from under the paintwork) inside their warranty period but without a service record from a dealer, in fact without most of it's service records. No issue (apart from Covid Lockdowns getting in the way) and was all sorted for me by Sytner at Nottingham :driving:

Under closer inspection (by someone who actually knows what they're looking at!) the problems were a bit more extensive, and whilst the sides were a lot better, to do a good job they needed doing too. It appears the car has had some sort of partial respray previously (not documented and done badly by an absolute numpty by the sounds of it) and then put straight under a cover instead of letting it breathe, which has trapped moisture in the paint hence the markings and explains why the top lacquer is absolutely fine with all the damage underneath.

The full wrap is costing 1.9k, whereas the the respray was looking absolutely minimum 4

I knew I was taking a punt, and whilst a respray would obviously be preferable I just don't have that kind of money, so hopefully the wrap being done by these guys (http://avwuk.com) will be a good option for now.

After I found out about the respray this came rather redundant as they definitely wouldn't have covered it

Ah ok, 1.9k isn't bad for a full wrap much lower than the costs I was previously quoted by some outfits. It's amazing how expensive paint jobs are in the UK these days and even worse in the US I think. Bet you can't wait to see the final results. :)

Yeah lots in Norwich itself were much higher, but this place out in Fakenham which is a bit more rural seemed super reasonable and is happy to sort a couple of dings in the bodywork too, so yes, I can't bloody wait!

I'm getting it done whilst I'm up in Scotland camping, so won't even miss out on any summer driving :driving:

Go retro, black vinyl roof, had one on my TR7.
Daren't touch it though as the roof panel underneath was rotten.

Looks great! Glad you went with matching top in orange. I’m not a fan of the black or fake carbon fiber roofs to be honest.

And the good thing about going with a wrap color that matches you original color is that the inner door and rocker panels in original VO paint are color matched to wrap.

How well does the wrap match your original color?
