New phone: new number?

Good morning! I have a random but important question, please. :)

I need to get a new phone and will be getting a contract phone. The question is this: Is it worth me accepting the new phone number that comes with the new phone? Reason behind me asking this is that although I have had my current mobile number for over 10 years so know it off by heart now, I seem to get spam texts and spam calls every now and again. It's pretty annoying, I don't like junk stuff. Will a brand new number be good for this so I will get less of these annoying communications or will it just be a recycled number?

Thanks in advance for your advice! :driving:

The new number could be recycled, but even if it's not it will end up in the hands of direct marketers eventually. Personally I'd keep the number - I've had mine for almost 20 years, and I'd hate to lose it. Plus the hassle of updating all my contact details everywhere it's registered would probably do my nut in. I don't know if the Tlephone Preference Service that's supposed to prevent direct marketing on fixed lines works for mobiles now - worth a Google ?

Agree - would never change my number due to having to advise everyone I knew and that unwanted calls would catch me up in weeks, so would just have to start blocking them again.

I like changing my number from time to time so only the people who I STILL want to have my mobile have it :)

even with a new number you'll get the un wanted rubbish

i have learned to appreciate all these calls about ppi, i just answer the phone a let it ramble away, hopefully costig them money

Thing is a lot of those calls are reversed charged if you answer and its takes a couple of seconds for it to connect its probably charging you

Hi all,
Bing - the TPS is for companies from the UK.

cj10jeeper - true, I guess the unwanted calls will still start to come through at some point :|

tomscott - I'm going to a Samsung S6; one of the reasons being I want a Gold phone :P . On a technical note, the screen is bigger than the one I have now, so will be nice to see graphics on a big screen.

srhutch - I have missed you also! Just saving fuel in my Honda Civic Diesel :tumbleweed: . Are you still hooning in your M? :)

Hey Taz, haha, I know what you mean about letting them ramble and hopefully inconveniencing them, but beware some will charge you, as Tom said. I think those who call with an 'answerphone' where it asks you to press a number - they be sure to charge you for the call. I don't answer numbers I don't know or withheld numbers unless expecting something workwise because I think it might give the dic*s an indication my number is active.

True Jasey, a good admin move  , or just to give people a wide berth in future so they can't hunt you down!

Keep the old number. It's buried deep in the brain now!
There will be people and institutions you have forgotten to tell and as others have said, the marketing calls will catch up again very quickly.

TPS covers any business based in the UK regardless of whether they're using a foreign call centre to make their calls. Here's an extract from their faq

"Companies based abroad who call into the UK and who are making calls on behalf of a UK based company, must comply with UK regulations and screen their call lists against TPS before making an unsolicited sales and marketing call to a UK telephone number. We do make the file available to overseas based companies under licence for the purpose of suppression so they know whom not to telephone but many overseas companies who telephone the UK on their own account from overseas do so to avoid legal and self regulatory restrictions. We would advise caution in responding to unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls from overseas especially if they are asking you to send them money or using a premium rate phone line (numbers beginning with 09). If you are receiving unsolicited sales and marketing calls from overseas you should contact the overseas company who is making the call."

And to answer Bing's question, yes you can register a mobile number with the TPS

I have a SIM in my gate system, the spam took about 2 weeks to arrive on that ... never made a call with it, never registered it for anything - only bought a PAYG SIM so nobody knows it.

You are wasting your time changing number ...
