New paint job or not?

Well as you know my car was hit last week and the rear bumper and boot are to be replaced, with the rear touched into the rear quarters. By chance they have agreed to paint and repair my front bumper free of charge and I asked if they could do my bonnet too, as anyone with an E89 knows the front suffers from stone chips. They normally charge £500 but said they wold do it for £225 as the car was in having work done. With this being done, they will fade into the two front panels above the wheels too.

So taking this all into account, do you think it's worth me asking how much extra just to do the whole car??? It's only the doors and roof left...

I am very temped!!

Your thoughts???

Be worth asking how much Starkers. Then you can make a decision when you have a proper price.
Do it yellow.

Are the chips that bad and does it really need the bonnet done? I wouldn't get anything painted that doesn't need it. A painted car is not a desirable car come resale time especially if its a poor job and blending/matching is needed. A recent thread on here regarding a chap saw him going back three times due to poorly matched colour and he knew the painters! A proper paint from top to bottom taking all parts off and windows out etc will be in excess of 2500. You get what you pay for.

Why is there scratches and dents on the doors and roof?.

Old or new z4 have stone chip issues on the front,( big bumper and bonnet) the worst place for me was on sides / the lower skirt just above the rear wheels, that just got pebble dashed from the front wide wheels, not to bad on the new new shape though, 18 inch wheels were shocking as well major stone chips on all 4 but no corrosion unlike the 06 and 08 si sport, a single chip would develop major corrosion.

I would not have any paint work done just for the sake of it. especially if it would possibly effect the bmw paint wrty, on my 08 it was 2.5 years old and it had 3 rust spots which were sorted under wrty. If its been messed with forget it.

Just a couple of chips on the roof from stones and the doors a couple small marks which only my OCD eyes can see

Def the bonnet though, as it really does chip badly on the E89.......the stones bounce off and leave nice craters!!!

You're right Carol. Surely a new paint job a isn't a bad thing, why would it affect the resale if professionally done??? If that was the case we'd all stay away from paint jobs......

Because by what you have described it is not a new paint job but a blow over. A new paint job is the whole car taken apart totally stripped of all trim, windows, seals etc etc rubbed down then primed and painted with several coats. Are they going to do that for a few hundred quid? A proper paint shop would be the cost above. I would not want to be buying a blown over couple of years old car and a lot of the time it is obvious when its been done, I would be asking myself why it had been should I take a look when buying all for the sake of a few stone chips which are wear and tear and every day life of driving a car.

I would run a mile if I seen any paint over spray on rubber or trim, had a bad experience with a TT from a main dealer.

Just for the record, good that the main bmw is doing this but a search on your car from the bmw database will show your car will have had a respray, or any work, ohh yes another alarm bells why would it have a respray forget it ill pick up another.

When I purchase a car I always now ask and show me what records are on the system, and if the car has had any repair or paint work done on the car. If it had a total paint job I would not purchase, even if it had bmw wrty. I also ask for any other paper work like the 140 point check and what they did when they got it and flipped to sale.

But thats me and I have been lucky to get a full refund from audi after 6 months of issues, the reason why I got a refund is that they did not show me the 140 point check at the time and after several weeks of asking then fabricated one, showing that there was no undercarage damage where actually there was and if they had done the check they would have notice this. on top half the car had a respray which was not up to audi specification according to an alternative audi dealer as such it was not an approved audi used car so full refund and purchased my first z4

It's unlikely they will paint any more than where the touch up is required. But the whole panel will need re-lacquering.

A guy I knew resprayed a whole E85 and said every panel is remove able.
