New owner with Ripply windscreen + Oil Leak

So I just picked up my 07 Coupe 3.0si, I love it!!

However it is not without fault, it seems to have an oil leak from the rocker cover gasket, I dont know if this will be covered by the warranty, will call them tomorrow and check but I suspect they might call it 'wear and tear'.

The second issue is a more bizarre one...it seems to have had a replacement windscreen in its past as its the only piece of glass that isnt stamped with the BMW Logo and anyway it looks fine, until you get behind the wheel, directly in the drivers eyeline there seems to be an imperfection in the glass, you can only see it when looking dead ahead...which is actually where you are looking 90% of the time I suppose, its almost like a ripple in the glass it gives a horrible effect! Fells like your going cross eyed as your driving alone, or like if you put someone else's glasses on and your eyes go weird and gives you a headache! - Anyone has any experience of this ever? Its very odd!

Not really sure how to solve it!?

Unfortunately its tainted my 1st day of love for the car ever so slightly

Haha well it does already have 1 stone chip but if it has less than 3 then they just repair rather than replace...

The car does seem to pic up stone chips like nobodys business though so...who knows, might not have to wait too long! :wink:

Not hard to get a new windscreen. Cannot say I've ever noticed the effect you describe & seem to end up with a new screen every year for some reason Hoping I can make this screen last slightly longer though, as always the concern a chimp installs it.

Glad you're ok and managed to control the car without crashing.

Just get onto your insurance tomorrow to get it arranged for the weekend as you do have windscreen cover!

Yup. Nail and hammer, right in front of the steering wheel. Bummer, s**t happens. The wavyness sounds like it's been polished to get rid of a scratch or blemish, which would affect the thickness of the glass. Or it's a crap pattern part replacement. Make sure you insist on OEM seals for the replacement though, as those pattern parts are crap too.

One easy way to get it replaced is to let one of the wiper arms (no blade fitted) 'accidently' slip back on the glass.
Drivers side is preferable.
I did mine this way, it's a very we'll known cause of failure according to the glass repair man.

Autoglass have always been fine replacing my windscreens on new-to-me cars. The S3 was scratched to buggery from not replacing wipers. The Z4 had done a few motorway miles and was pitted in too many places to be acceptable to my OCDness...

I agree with Bing, sounds like a scratch has been polished out ans has left a trench which would distort your vision through the windscreen. I got a replacement screen (£90) from a breakers (scratch free) and got Autoglass to fit it. Accidental breakage and replacement is the alternative way to go and will only cost you your excess!

So many people bemoan the rising cost of motor insurance yet here every other suggestion appears to be to scam the OP's insurer for a new windscreen.

Another realistic - and probable - outcome is that a replacement windscreen, fitted by the insurer's nominated supplier, could be as bad as the one that is causing the issue in the first instance?? It should be noted that the majority of windscreens fitted via insurance claims are cheap copies of the original. The basic rule is (with the rare exception) if the glass does not bear the BMW logo, it is not as good as one that does. Anyone who suggests that the logo is 'stamped' on, or that the glass is 'as good as' doesn't know what he or she is talking about.

It can also be quite a lottery as to who fits it, and what the overall workmanship will be like.

I had this with a windscreen fitted by Autoglass last month. An aftermarket screen was fitted and both of the top corners had gaps between the gasket and the A-pillars. Also the logo for the screen was only just below the eyeline of the driver above the instrument binnacle!
Had it inspected and they fitted a genuine BMW stamped screen and a genuine BMW rubber surround ( that I provided and insisted they fitted! ) and it is now perfect again.

Just put "Used Z4 Windscreen" into your search engine and you should get some ideas of availability.

Just out of curiosity where did you buy this from? I test drove 1 a few weeks ago with this exact issue. I had to cut the test drive short as it gave me a headache. Never experienced it before.
