New owner requiring advice!

Hi!

Im Chris from North devon -

Picked up my 03 3.0 Z4 manual yesterday, and im in love! Amazing car.

However there are a few issues, that i will take up with the dealer if i need, to - but I normally do all the work on my own car so i would appreciate any help !!

1) Sat nav screen. The motor/mechanism is not working properly, wont go up on its own. Goes down perfectly fine, and you can adjust the tilt fine, but just wont go from being shut to open. It judders back and forth. It can be lifted up gently by hand and works fine. Does the entire screen need replacing or is there something simpler ?

2) airbag light on. I was told by the dealer the previous owner had disconnected the passenger air bag due to have a baby seat in there. Due to it being an early model, it doesnt have the key switch to disable it. Where is the most likely place it has been disconnected ? Again if i cant sort this, ill get the dealer to do it.

3) Only 2 out of the 10 speakers work. (two mids in the rear)
Is this likely to be a failed amp ? Im going to check the amp and head unit connections. I assume all the fuses are ok as the radio and some speakers do work ?

4) Ive come from a Mk5 golf gti, and the steering in this does feel strange when going in a straight line in comparison. Slightly pulling on the steering wheel occasionally, and a bit twitchy. It has bridgestone potenzas all the way round. My first thoughts were get the tracking and possibly wheels balanced and go from there ? It handles superbly otherwise, and its only noticable on uneven roads.

The rest of the car is immaculate, and has only covered 36k miles, so just want to make it perfect :).

If I need to post this somewhere else, please let me know.

Thanks in advance !!

Chris.

Sat nav motor is faulty

Airbag light, check under passenger seat if cable removed from yellow plug, then needs coding to remove light

Steering is twitchy due to run flat tyres, get then swapped to none run flats solves the problem.

lovely thankyou for the help!

Is it fairly simple to replace the sat nav motor without replacing the entire unit ?

lovely thankyou for the help!

Looks like the entire sat nav needs replacing then. :(. Will go and check the seat now.

Any ideas about the speakers ?

When I picked mine up a few weeks ago it was on run flats and it had exactly the same symptoms as you describe, I changed them to normal tyres which are a lovely set of vredstein sessantas and what a difference it makes you should do it. Enjoy that 3.0 as they are great, I adore mine :)

When I picked mine up I had read lots of posts describing the way run flats affected the car handling and as soon as I was on my way home in it I totally agreed with everything that had been said and I knew that the tyres had to be changed as a priority as I didn't like the way it felt, and it was really twitchy on country lanes.

Yea thats exactly it, its fine on new tarmac, but anything else and it just doesnt inspire confidence!! Whats annoying is the tyres are almost new!

Ive also just taken the amplifier apart and its nackered. Obvious water ingress/burnt track on the board and the smell of burnt electronics, looks like the cap's have popped!

It is fine on new tarmac I agree but sadly our roads here are bordering on third world quality at times with shoddy repairs etc etc, if I were you I would bite the bullet and get those tyres changed I got 4 new Vreds delivered from the internet direct to the garage who fitted them for around £425 which I thought was very good, you could try and sell your run flats on here as there will be someone who will buy them which will soften the blow of buying new tyres, but for me there was no way I could put up with how the car handled as it was a bit scary on bumpy country lanes!

Somebody on here had success in cleaning the stepper motor to get it working. Was recent, but can't remember who.

There are compnaies that can repairs the amps, but not sure if they can due to water.

Bridgestone runflats are crap, either change to non run flats or another make or run flats.

Yep if i cant put up with the tyres, i will definetly replace them!

Thats interesting about cleaning the motor. Because it does still move, it seems like it just needs cleaning. Im an electrical engineer by trade so i might see if i can take it apart and see whats what!

Yea the amp seems fried. Phone call to the dealer on tuesday and hope they bite the bullet and source me a new one!!

Ive also just checked all of the passenger airbag connectors (under seat, behind dash, inside door) and they are all connected and seem ok, hopefully it just needs a reset. Will get it scanned sometime.

thanks for all the responses.

Iv never being dead set against runflats, I understand none RF are better (hence why they are fitted to all M cars) but I can live with them.

However having driven both BMW Hydraulic and Electric steering systems the effect of RFTs are more pronounced on the hydraulic, which will amplify the point's you mentioned in your original post.

So making sure that even tyre ware, tracking, alignment and tyre pressures are all correct and within acceptable tolorences is very important.

The + points are that when you are set up, hydraulic steering offers the best feedback and driving feel you can perhaps get!?

Hope this offers some ideas for you :))
