New Owner Issues

Hi. I am a proud new owner of a 2010 SDrive23i M Sport but have a few issues. I am finding it very difficult to change gear smoothly out of 1st into 2nd and out of 2nd into 3rd. I am an experienced driver but have never had a BMW before and wonder if there is a technique which I am failing to use? Also, selecting reverse is not a simple, smooth action. Is all this typical of Z4s?

I am intending to take the car back to the dealer anyway as there is often a lag (stutter?) when accelerating fairly hard in 2nd gear at lower revs. I think this must be a fault?

Other than this, I'm enjoying Z4 ownership!

Hi and Welcome!
The gear change issues you have are fairly typical of these BMW 'boxes. They have a "rifle bolt" change and are just quite stiff, you'll get used to it. When I step out of my car and drive something else the gear change feels a lot lighter normally. Getting it into reverse is just a case of pushing past the resistance point, there is no up/down push or button associated with it like in some cars. It does feel stiff at first but again, you get used to it. I can't comment on your lag issues confidently I'm afraid, but it doesn't sound normal.

Hope this helps

It doesn't sound right to be honest, all the BMWs I've owned I've never experienced any problems selecting or changing through the box, it certainly shouldn't be noticeable or difficult.

Tim.

1st to 2nd is rough for me too but it's not a big issue.

My first BMW was a 3 series coupe and at first I thought there were some issues with the gears. I then moved to Audis and completely missed the BMW gearbox. Hence, my move back to the Z4 which feels more 'normal' to me. It does take some getting used to but you'll end up loving it! Not so sure about the lag or stutter tho

Many thanks for the replies. For clarity, I'm not so much worried about the mechanics of the gearbox. Its more the interaction between the gearbox and the clutch that I'm struggling with. I find it hard to set off smoothly from start; then 1st to 2nd is particularly jerky (as in I can do a smooth change between the 2); 2nd to 3rd is better but still not smooth. 3rd upwards is absolutely fine. Any ideas please? Thanks

Used to have a 23i manual and had the same issue.

Try removing the clutch delay valve (cdv). I found this solution in 1 forum: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=473094

But it's perfect for e89 as well, as some reports in German zroadster forum show :)

BTW - no need to buy an expensive "Zeckhausen" or so CDV. It is easy to modify the existing CDV, as shown here, for our E89, just remove the insert in the CDV, e.g. with a bolt or a hex key:

As an alternative you might drill a bigger hole into the CDV - but with much more hassle:

Sorry, both links in German - but you will certainly find an explanation in English or translate the explanations with google.

Best regards

Mick

The CDV is just connected by quick connectors.
Just unclip remove CDV and replug.
