New owner in Norfolk

Hi all,

So, this week has been eventful.. I picked up my first Zed, completely off the cuff. I have never owned one but always admired from afar.

Purchased as a non-runner, as the previous owner was barely using it, and didnt really know what he had, I dont think. Came with no MOT etc and does need some TLC. So this could turn into a project thread!!

Anyway, I paid my money and dragged it on to a low loader Wednesday evening. 4 hours later it was on my drive at home. The next day, I went over it with a magnifying glass. Admittedly, I didnt really do this prior to payment as I just got that warm feeling about it (you know when you know). Obviously I had done my homework on the history etc and I was prepared to recommission it regardless. What amazes me the most, considering this car has seen so little use, particularly in recent years, is how it started first time, every time. No smoke, no rattles, no leaks. It amazes me.

Day 2, on the low loader again and straight to a local BMW specialists for a recommission job. At this time, costs have been left ambiguous. Ive literally no idea what this project will cost, but I am ok with that for now (might be tears)..

I think this is a rare or rareish spec, happy to be advised.. Personally I love the spec, it has what I wanted.

3.0 manual
Heated M sport seats
Cup holders! (Who knew!)
Parking sensors

The alloys are BMW but ive not seen these on many others, I dont know what they are nor particularly like them, so will probably change them. The sound system is knackered, so will be looking to replace that too. Advice on options is welcomed!

All tips, tricks, and hints are very welcomed. You lot will probably know more about the car than I do.

Based in Norfolk, always happy to meet up.

Cheers

Dan

Dan welcome

You’ve fallen at the first hurdle by not posting an obligatory pic, but your bravery will offset the error!

You have lots of good guys and gals around you in Norfolk who will help out, I am sure Martin Enuff Zed will be along in a minute to say hi- he has a broad experience of project cars!

Good luck- look forward to you getting it roadworthy and keeping us appraised on the progress

Morning Dan,
Well straight in at the deep end then!
I'm in Attleborough, not sure how that relates to you?

What age is the car? pre-facelift with the M54 engine, or post, with the N52.
I ask as my experience is mainly M54. In fact I have 'Project Freeleeta' on the drive right now.

Do you know exactly what is needed on the car to get it roadworthy? A dealer ain't gonna be cheap that's for sure.
If it helps in the future, I can help out with stuff too.
Roof motors, suspension, vanos overhaul, disa overhaul, power steering motor change, door lock changes, and many other bits.
I also have a very good rapport with Stuart (bigwinn) over in Lincoln. We have spent a lot of time on video calls working through stuff and if I haven't done something, good chance he has so we have most bases covered.
May be worth getting a quote from the dealer first then seeing if there's anything you can do, or get help with, and save a few quid.

Regarding wheels, there are literally hundreds of options. Best to start by searching through the forum for a few pics of what you like and start from there.

You need three posts to PM but I think you'll be able to see mine before that, so I'll ping over my mobile number for you.

Well, this is why I didnt share a pic... you have been warned!! Haha

Thanks for the very warm welcome!

Nothing wrong with the pic - you said it was on a low loader so nothing to be shocked at.

Great offer from Martin there as well

Well it doesn't look too bad, apart from it's position!
I think those 'may' be later E89 wheels, but I'm no wheel expert.
Good news is it's an M54 engine, so I know my way around it.
Wait and see what the dealer says, but there are a few things could be wrong under the bonnet, a lot of which I could probably help with a fair bit cheaper if you'd like?
Do you have any idea as to why it's a non-runner?

PS. I'm home all day once the dogs have had their walk, so if you wanted a run out for a chat and to look a couple of others for ideas, just let me know. I can even show you four different options for an 18" wheel. (MV1, MV2, 107 & 108)

Err............ has anyone else noticed Dan's list of previous motors??!!

Safe to say we have a petrol-head in the ranks!

Ive stored your number Martin, will drop a text when you're out of the woods.

Personally, I wouldnt call it a non-runner, it starts and drives fine, ill send a message with what I know. As mentioned, I dont think the seller knew what he had and wasnt too sure what to do, as if the low loader was too much hassle perhaps?!

The garage have been told to recommision, ie, check it all over, service and MOT. But to call before they start pulling anything about, and charge me for it.

I suspect Martin and I will become best friends when it comes to upgrades!!

As pictures are mandatory, here are some. I do have some images of the older stuff. Im a biker too, which currently includes a BMW as it goes!

I must confess, 'all the gear, no idea'.

Aye. Obviously a former 'rice rocket' fan! Good to see a couple of the most fantastic cars of the '90s (Evos) in there too.
BTW welcome Dan. Very helpful bunch of people on here so you are in the right place.

By the way Dan, from the photos you sent me, the sound system looks like the 10-speaker set up.
There should be a raised section of carpet on the front left face of the boot, which has an amp behind it.
Could be a multi-changer for CDs in the centre storage box too.

Sounds like once you get it back, double check all the speakers, just to be sure it's not a weird balance set up. Make a note of which aren't working. There may be a guru on here who can say that if a particular set aren't working then it's likely to be an amp or something like that.
Not my area of expertise.
