New OpieOils offer

How long will the oil keep? For the M, you get 8 litres of oil in the service pack.

It'll keep indefinitely if not opened, then over a year once opened, but make sure the bottle is sealed properly (not easy with these new spouts) or transfer to a bottle that will seal properly.

What is best for a 3.0 then?
I know the LL01 is supposed to be the right one, which is 0w30 isn't it? But when I do a search it recommends 5w-30 which is LL04
Is it a small difference that doesn't matter or is one better than the other?

I've got a service coming up in a couple months so may aswell stock up.

I paid £32 per can of Edge 0w-30 from opie using my SXOC membership login which seemed a good price. Once registered with an appropriate car club affliation you can see the better prices and also the deals for 2x and 4x 4ltrs which makes it a bit cheaper again.

Grrr, such a pain. For the X5 they have the wrong spec listed, so a service pack is not available for the oil I want. The 2 * 4l is so much more expensive then the service pack 9l ...

Why would I want 5W30 if the manual states 0W30, even though "it will do". I am sure that the dealer will void warranty if you come with different grade oil for them to put in.

I'm sure if you tell Guy/Simon at OpieOils, they will be able to correct it, or give you the reason why it's listed as such? Maybe BMW changed their specification as in LL01 to LL04?

Although if you simply pick an 4.6 X5 from 1999-2001 instead it will come up with the LL01 spec of 0w30.

Yes, I mailed Simon and he suggests 5W30 as that is "the new spec". I would like the OEM spec though in case of warranty issues.

The 0W30 from the other X5 range is not the LL04 spec which is what the car needs. I have clicked on a few other diesel models to see if I could find a model which had the 0W30 Turbo Diesel LL04 spec (rather then the 0W30 LL01 spec), but no luck.

Sent another email to see what they can do with regards to the service pack with the correct oil.

I checked my last service invoice and it mentions they used Castrol SLX LL04, so does that mean it was 5w30?

And my last one from a dealer said Castrol GTX, even though they assured me it was just due to the fact that they only had one oil code for the service department :x

mmm-five, thanks for the tip. Two sets of oil ordered and received.

5w30 will be fine as long as it satisfies the ACEA A3/B3 and/or BMW LL01 (Longlife) Spec that BMW states. If not getting the longlife stuff, make sure you bin it every 7.5k (half way) or year, whichever is earliest. The best ones would be Castrol Edge, Mobil1 and the other premium brands.

Either way id throw the BMW servicing intervals out of the window if you're intending on keeping the car for a while, i'd be very paranoid about running oil having covered 15k! :o

I was a little peeved to say the least when Sytner Sheffield charged me £83 + 'Enviromental Charges' + VAT for the oil alone in a service... I almost wet myself!! Especially as I have an unopened 20L drum of Mobil1 5w30 in the shed i forgot about!!

I want to make sure that I do not get charged the environment charge, as that as £15 last time. I can dump the oil for free at the local council tip which is about half a mile away from the dealer.

I'm in the same boat as Laura above, I've really struggled to find a definitive answer to this question but what grade is better- 5w30 is said to be 'fine' but does that mean that 0w30 is better? I thought low viscosity was a bad thing, so why is 5w30 just fine and not THE one to get?

Others (CJ I think) have gone for 0w40 on the 2003 3.0i...

So confusing!
