New oil leak.

Just noticed my engine is wet with oil down the exhaust manifold side again. When I bought the car a couple of years ago, I changed the rocker cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket an everything was fine. Now it’s wet again. What are the chances of one of these gaskets leaking again? Or is there another concern on that side of the engine?
Thanks.

Without being able to see where the oil is coming from in your engine, none of us will be able to give an accurate diagnosis of course, but the valve cover gasket should not have hardened up excessively in the space of only two years. A gasket can only seal as well as the two sealing faces will allow - did the top of the head and the underside of the valve cover get a good cleaning before reinstallation? Some people add a sealant to the "half moons" in the cylinder head before installing the valve cover. Is your leak coming from there, perhaps?

It’s difficult to see where it’s coming from. My mechanic friend (a very good one) changed them. He wouldn’t cut corners. I was just wondering if there was another “usual” suspect that I didn’t know about before I start investigating.

[ref]Sgr74[/ref] if it's over the exhaust then it's often the valve cover gasket. Perhaps blast it all off with brake cleaner (and rag if possible) and then inspect it after your next trip out in it. If it's not being driven, you could get it up to temp at home to try to encourage it to weep?

Just been though this with my 2.5, oil dripping onto exhaust and smoking. Replaced the gaskets main and plug wells in the centre and all 15 of the rubber securing bolt seals. Tried cleaning off the exhaust, did notice that I still have some smoke appearing when up to temp but hoping its just residue thats burning off. No signs of any leaks but without a good run out can't be sure. Did check the vacuum by looking at the fuel trims and they are ok, so confident no air leaks.
