Back in November we posted a press release issued by BMW North America, in which it was confirmed that the N54 engine powering the 135i, 335i/xi, 535i/xi and the X6 xDrive35i are affected by a turbo-lag issue.
Out if these models, the only ones affected were the those manufactured prior to March 2008.
Is that the same engine in the Zed? I guess none were pre-Mar 08.

A sad day really.
As much as there is a market for the turbos, what about people who WANT a big power NA engine, and are willing to suffer the 5-10% worse economy by doing so?
I'd much prefer a 3.0i making 265bhp, than a 3.0 turbo making 300bhp... with the added lag and softer engine note etc.

Turbo's!! Softer engine note!!! Your kidding!! My 35i is a lot more raucous than my old 3.0si, and I was happy with that at the time!
Also, what lag? :?
I do agree though that it is a shame to have to resort to turbos to make the power now because of regs! But saying that, that 35i engine is awesome!

Turbo's have come on a bit since then!
Your right on the turbo engine not needing as much silencing, but it hasn't got the same exhaust as the old one so I don't get what your saying there? :?
Actually these days it would be interesting to see how much the turbo's contribute to the overall power (BHP) of the engine! I bet it isn't as much as you'd think! Probably got more to do with the torque!

Yeah of course, the old stuff was laggy in a proper way
The standard 35i is very low boost, so it's just filling in the torque curve and adding a bit of power. There more for emissions and efficiency than adding significant torque or power.
I'm sure the tuned versions feel more laggy as they need to spool up more to get the extra go.
Even in the linked document it shows that the new twin-scroll turbo is 'less' laggy than the 35i, but is clearly shown to be still quite laggy on reaching peak torque with time
As much as these engines are clearly not bad turbo engines, infact they are damn cool (would like a 135Ci), and even tuned with a bit more lag I'm sure it would add character... it's just a shame BMW don't offer a big NA with good power anymore
