New MX5

So with the configurator live on Monday and prices finally announced, is anyone here interested??

pistonheads:
Ahead of a UK debut at the Festival of Speed, prices have been confirmed for the entire range. It begins at £18,495 for the 1.5-litre, 131hp SE with the range topped by the 160hp 2.0-litre Sport Nav at £23,295.

I've never been in one so not sure what the fuss is about. Might see if I can get a test in the 2.0.

MX-5s have a cult following, new one doesn't look too bad. They've kept it true to it roots and people know what they are getting. I have to say for £23,295 I'd most certainly have it over a more expensive 18sdrive or 20sdrive E89 that's for sure.

Ive driven a couple of them over the last couple of years and thoroughly enjoyed both...

yes I'm interested in the new one but it'll have to wait a while...

I looked at the previous generation with retractable hardtop alongside the E89 but went for the Zed as the Mazda was just a bit too cramped in the cabin and the boot was woeful and smaller than my Z3s. Other reason was the Zed after discount worked out the same as the Mazda so no brainer. Granted with hood down the MX5s boot space isn't compromised but it was all just a bit too small for daily use. I've yet to see the new model but looking at the pics I can't make my mind up on its looks. The good is from some angles it has a sniff of F Type from others it looks like a Dinky toy with tiny wheels which probably helps the handling. As a general funabout I would be interested but not as a main car. I would be tempted in a three year old car to replace the Z3 maybe.

The new model looks great on the publicity photos but will wait to see what I think when seen 'in the flesh'.

Previous owner of a Mk 2 MX5 and can't fault them as a cheap fun car - where else can you get top down fun like that for so little money - and reliability!

We loved ours and it never failed to put a grin on my face. Just lacked the sense of occasion and seriousness of our Zeds.

:driving:

Ideal size if you're a girl or a pygmy but for a normal sized freak like me too small :( Last generation ones were high tax and pretty thirsty as well as slow ( in comparison to a 2.5 or 3.0 zed ) and a bit plasticky - other than that though spot on !

From a styling point of view I'm not sure about it..

I think they sold out in trying to go for the generic 'angry' / sharp trend that cars are going for these days. An attempt to macho the front end up I guess. Everyone from BMW to Hyundai is at it at the mo but It just doesn't sit well with the small roadster layout imo.. very GT86. The more I see it the less I like that front end which is the exact opposite to how it usually works for me  I also hate the trend of awkwarly stuck on sat nav screens that seems to be the go with mazdas and mercs lately, what's with that?

The f-type esque rear end looks great in red but it doesn't sit well with me in white where it starts to look a little.. cheap? They needed to mix up the styling and I'm sure it'l grow but for now I'm not sure they've pulled off the styling side of things. The interior I think generally looks great though.

I read nothing bad about the dynamics of the thing and wouldn't expect anything less from the mx5's evolution, and the price here is pitched at the GT-86 range, having been in one of those, and from reading about the mx5 I know which I'd rather already.

and in looking at the outgoing mx5, and having yet another look on the new, it's grown on me already

As I mentioned in another thread, we were thinking of that car 's new gen.
My wife liked it and fit pretty good.
Me...not so much
Prefer the orientation of the paddles on the Z better

The drive would be the clincher for me and most likely run rings around any Zed but the painted interior doors panels is a bit naff and a little cheap looking :( Looking at the exterior pics though I'm likeing it more and more and its a great price :)

this car is going to epic! can't wait to see what BBR do with it in terms of turbo kits! very very nice car, getting expensive however for the engine/power output. i Think they need to start looking at 1.6 turbo's... The fiesta ST engine in this would ROCK, lightweight , great performance and really tuneable, an easy 230hp for relatively low cost.

Would love to know how a turbo'd MX5 goes tbh. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the smaller displacement highish boost camp (literally the ONLY thing stopping me from pulling the trigger on a 4c!) but I bet they go like the clappers. Saw a very low cost up to 280bhp kit on the market over here for the outgoing 2.0 and can't see that as being anything but exhilarating on the right bit of road!

With the MX5 just like the Suzuki Swift Sport its not about outright power hence why these cars have no turbos, all about just having enough power to go with the handling :)

Its good to see investment in a small market, it looks good,

Well, I went for a 2.0 S Drive over the Mazda, did I make the right choice? hmmmmm not so sure and will never know. Whilst the Zed had the looks the rest.....well lets just say a it was a disapointment for me in the engine, ride and handling dep't :(

I don't think BMW have ever really nailed in the Roadster dep't unlike Mazda.

I quite like the look of the MX5

Obviously top down motoring is a massive bonus with the Mazda but if you weren't massively bothered would you choose this over a BRZ or GT86 if all you wanted was something for a weekend blast round the countryside.?

if i had the choice of a 2.0l mx5 or 2.0l bmw it would HAVE to be the mx5 its a proper drivers car.

This is why I have an S2000 (normally aspirated 2L) as a daily driver at the moment instead of a 2.2 Z3 or Z4 roadster.

100% agree. the s2000 rocks, so many good mods for them too!

Don't get me started, I'm trying to resist :headbang: I've already fitted bipass pipes to the back boxes, made a couple of homemade modifications to the airbox, lined the hood where it's prone to tearing and added hydraulic bonnet struts. When I have time, I'm going to modify a spare timing chain tensioner and I'm waiting on LED lamps to be delivered. I'm fighting the urge to spend my SC fund on the forced induction for the wrong car
