New MOT requirements

Just reading the new mot checks, one to watch out for is failure of the headlamp cleaners on HID units. Wonder how long they will last before they fail? Seems they are a design requirement due to the potential to dazzle if lense is dirty. Also the leveling unit. The switches for these seem awfully exposed.

Also noticed road tax has gone up £250 to £280 for the 23i.
The roads are getting in worse and they want more money!
About time we all refused to pay.
 
Its not road tax... its VED... you're not paying for the roads, you're paying to use your car on the roads. Nice distinction for the gov.uk

Vehicle tax was introduced in the 1888 budget and the current system of excise duty applying specifically to motor vehicles was introduced in 1920. This excise duty was ring-fenced for road construction and was paid directly into a special Road Fund from 1920 until 1937 after which it was treated as general taxation. Even during this period the majority of the cost of road building and improvement came from general and local taxation due to the tax being too low for the upkeep of the roads.
 
I thought washers on HID's have always been a requirement (or were they a requirement, but didn't have to work)?.I noticed there was something on there that said if you have washers they must work, but I read that as meaning they must work no matter what type of lights you have. All a bit wooly IMO.
 
My particular concern is how long they will continue to pop up and down, before they fail.The problem i find with the headlamp washer is when they operate they spray water all over the bonnet and they must distort the light output for a while as it takes some time for the water to run off, especially if you have added antifreeze/fluid to the bottle, which has also covered the bonnet.
 
The way I read it was all cars needed washers that work with HIDs but you didn't need auto levellers if you have a sports car with a small boot.
 
The headlamp washers don't wash every time either. Bet some numpty fails an owner for faulty washers.

That's what the the peddal on the right is for - the airflow will very quickly clear any water off the lens!!

What tends to fail is the pipes going from the bottle (or rather the washer motor attached to the bottle) and the washers. You find you use it once, it works, then the rest of the water drains on the the floor. There's not much to go wrong with the things themselves as they work off the water pressure.
 
HID's do not need to be fitted with levellers or washers to pass an MOT, however, where they are fitted, they must work, to pass the MOT.

Ah, but they do it every time the first time you use the jest after switching the ignition on :wink:

Just want to hope the MOT tester knows this or figures it out :D
