But surely the only way a chipped ECU/modified engine can fall under the MOT banner is if it changes the emission readouts and puts the above the recommendations for the that model of car? :?

I dont believe for one second they can do this..... not all centers will be equipped and probably around 90% of scoobies and Evo's on the road would subsiquently fail!!

I think it's somewhat poinmtless fretting over how they will do it, as I'm sure where's there's a will there's a way and it's a part of European Legislation.

Judging by this post elsewhere (that I cannot vouch for) they have already written to MOT stations advising them:

Just got a leter from vosa outlining changes to the mot test due to come in from December next year , these changes include airbag lamps , engine management lamp , electric steering lamps these warning lamps on will constitute a fail , headlamp aim adjusters if fitted must work , hid bulbs fitted to a not type approved headlamp also a fail , all electrical wiring must be secure and not exposed or chafing , battery must be secure and here's a good one , illegal engine chipping !!! , these items are being brought in to keep us in line with european legislation , they are still working on the finer points and how to positively check for the tuning side of things but it will come into force.

I have just read it too, cant see anything mentioned about ecu or HID, the rumour mill continues

The extract I put at the top of this page is taken straight from the Vosa website. seach out the October 10 newsletter and read it yourself.

Might have to bite the bullet and get my airbag light sorted :( .... will miss the little bugger, he's been on for 2 years!

I have read about this in NL a while back, the whole thing about after market HID kits is an issue there as well. But it has already been law for some time and they still have no uniform answer yet.

I think clamping down of the boy racer brigade with their blindingly bright hid headlights would benefit everyone on the road, however as someone mentioned whats to stop them from refitting after the test. I don't agree with clamping down on remaps, many remaps are done to improve running and fuel economy especially in Diesels.

I did see an article saying that the the government was thinking about making the test when a car is 4 years old and every 2 years after that, I would like that to be brought in as i trust myself to keep on top of my car maintenance. I think that modern cars nowadays dont need to be tested at 3 years old, obviously the industry is spitting the dummy because they stand to lose alot of money.

That 4 year rule was brought in elsewhere as well. Funny that when they are to lose money they won't drop it here.

Damn my first MOT is due in Jan and I dont fancy having to remove my plate again - took me ages to remove all the sticky residue the first time :( :(
Hairdrier, old credit card, white spirit, and elbow grease!

I'll be interested to hear how they'll enforce the HID thing, particularly if the HID is completely contained within the headlamp unit itself (like the slim ones can be), and doesn't take the piss with brightness and colour tint. A Z4 with halogens still has the headlamp wash (well, some of them do) but not the self-levelling, so perhaps they'll have to investigate if you have the self-levelling sensors fits. And I'm not sure how they'd do that?

Well it should take all of 10 seconds to tell if they wish. Light switch with a manual height adjuster = non oem xenon. No suspension sensors = non oem xenon. Job done.

Cant really see this happening, and how the hell will they check on remaps :D They are not going to have access to every standard map on a car, and plus all will be different to a degree anyway. No power output will be the same, so thats a no no, unless they mean the bluechip etc for diesels. HID's are another bit of a blind spot in the law. I agree that standard non projector style lights should not have them, and i know they can be bright. But so are normal xenons anyway, thats the point

Will be keeping an eye on this, and my mate is an MOT tester, so he will keep me informed hopefully!

I think the problem with HID's is that as they do not auto level on bumpy/ uneven roads they dazzle people.. as opposed to ones which autolevel that (as my gf puts it) dances around - so minimise dazzling drivers.

However the Z4 being so low, and with projectors are't so bad... but then then we cant have one law for low roadsters and another for the likes of the Golfs... which are higher, and have non projectors.

Now the clocks have changed.. i drive home from work in the dark.. and everyday i see the same bloody Mk4 Golf.. which has what looks like.. misalligned aftermarket lights (with halo rings) and 8K HID's... which blind every road goer - especially those in lower cars..
