New mot laws

Just had a headlamp bulb blow and need to replace it. I was goin to upgrade anyway as the standard lights are poor at best but I’ve heard the new mot laws out in may have something in them bout lights . So I’m looking for recommendations for bulbs but also to stay in the law 😀
 
Think it's only hids that you can't install. Normal bulbs that are brighter etc are all fine.
 
Yeah that's right, it refers to aftermarket HID installs not brighter halogens.

I have Halfords '150% brighter' in mine, not too sure I'd agree with the claimed 150% but they are an improvement over the previous bulbs!
 
The only change to lights I've heard of is a check of the reverse light if fitted. Apart from that it's as was lights wise for the MOT.

Significant new mot regs come in from May inc ban on aftermarket hid’s
There’s a long thread on here about it or check the DLA MOT sites
 
You could always install hid's and remove them come MOT time.

Standard halogen bulbs in z4's are woeful at best and upgraded bulbs usually blow far too often.
 
Very happy with my Ring Xenon 130s, just passed its MOT too. They are a lot brighter than the standard candles

An amazing con to fill a standard halogen bulb with xenon gas instead of any other inert gas such as halogen and market it as ‘xenon’ Brilliant marketing ...
Sure they maybe ‘up to 130% brighter’, but just done by pumping more amps through and sacrificing filament life
Please note I’m not criticising you at all, just a comment in Ring
 
Whiter, longer range, and as I drive before the suns up and after it sets I.e about 3 hrs a day and have been since October I can’t complain about filament longevity either.

To get the bulbs to glow brighter they will need to run them hotter. By doing so the bulb life will be shorter. If you check the manufacturers specs you will find they confirm they won't last as long.

What it comes down to is does the price/brightness/reduced life work for you.

I have being using Philips Extreme Vision +130% headlights for 18 months on my second car that does around 14k per year and I drive with headlights on at least 60% of the time. Just make sure your connectors make good contact with the light bulb as they run very hot and if the connection is not sound, you may find your connector will melt.
 
The draft of the new MOT inspection due May 2018 is out. Lots of changes including to advisories and 'minor fails' that may not actually be fails :? reversing lights being checked, tough changes to headlights if you have aftermarket HID's, basically any kind of warning light being an instant fail and a general kicking for all things diesel including DPF removal being a failure now. Cars over 40 years old are exempt and noticed an interesting exemption (not sure if it's new) for "substantially modified vehicles" e.g. rally prepared with buckets, no rear seats and cage etc, whereby airbags, ABS or pretty much anything else you would strip out are not required. Note: I don't think fitting a stubby and a black grills will qualify :P

Thanks. Just read up on it. I guess that finally sorts that out. I know they were already kind of illegal by not conforming to beam patterns or having washer jets in alot of cases.
I guess alot will still scrap through though if the tester doesn't spot them etc
 
I put some Philips high intensity bulbs in my Santa Fe. About 12 months later they both blew at the same time very early one morning. Still had the old bulbs so just popped them back in, they carried on as before - a bit duller but didn’t ever need changing.
 
i find the standard halogen ones fine - i just adjusted them upwards a little bit to give more reach. Still don't blind oncoming drivers so it's win win
