Might be leaving yourself wide open with your insurers if you have a shunt.

My youngest crashed into the back of a saxo that had wrapped rear lights hence no indication of braking
He pointed it out to the police but they didn,t seem bothered

No might about it I would have thought. If the OP has a shunt surely all its going to take is for the other party to be a bit savvy and take a snap of those windows. Even if they should be banged to rights claim wise the OP's claimed is Fooked as the other party's insurer will definetly try to dodge the claim on the basis the OP has an illegal vehicle on the road.

I suspect the OPs insurer will also try and dodge the claim for the same reasons.
Best case they would pay out for the 3rd party if the OP is at fault.

Surely in the event of an insurance claim OP can say he didn't see them!

Ye insurance is a problem. Reduced visibility and all that, insurers would take one look and be like... REVOKED.

The biggest issue you are likely to face is if you have an accident, your insurers are highly likely not to pay out as you will be driving a vehicle that is not road legal and they would argue is dangerous.
