Hi All,
I’ve recently joined the forum as hopefully in the next month or so I can start the search for an M coupe. I’ve had a 3.0 Z4 back in 2010 but have since required 4 seats, but now am going to be looking for a toy. In a nutshell my ideal car will be space grey, no nav, low miles and owners, if there are any out there who over the coming months maybe interested in parting with please reach out. I’ll put a more detailed “wanted” ad when my piggy bank is full. In the mean time will enjoy researching all the feeds on the forum. Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Even Silver Grey maybe a challenge as only 73 were registered in the UK, and I've got one of them. :D

Your previous one sounds nice so good luck finding the right MC.

To be fair mine doesn't fit your ideal criteria at all!

It has Sat Nav, 96,800 miles recorded and I'm the 8th keeper. But I love it. :D

I think you need a combination of being willing to travel, patience and ideally a bit of luck.

May I enquire as to why low mileage and owners is of particular importance?

I only ask as those things will go up when you buy and drive/enjoy the car - so I'd argue that unless you're going to squirrel it away as a proper investment car (separate subject but IMO also not worth it), all you'll do is pay a premium for something with no real guarantee of being well looked after, but that will lose comparatively more value for being used and enjoyed!

If it were me, I'd look for something in the region of 80k miles, with the main jobs done (Rod bearings, Vanos, suspension bushes, dampers that sort of thing). You'll save yourself a few grand on the asking price vs a low miler, have greater peace of mind knowing the big jobs (and bills!) have been done, and you'll be able to enjoy the car without worrying about putting miles on and impacting resale value.

I'd also personally not worry a great deal about number of owners, provided not REALLY excessive! These cars are a bit of a niche - so people buy them and move them on at a higher frequency compared to other cars, having found they don't really gel with them, or that the car doesn't really fit with their needs/use-case. Provided there's good solid evidence of it being looked after (services done by a reputable indy or main dealer), and plenty of paperwork on the major maintenance bits, that's what I'd be focusing on.

Sorry if that's all irrelevant and you've thought of all of that but hopefully it might help!

Given the age of these cars, and how they hold up, I’d consider 80K a relatively low mileage example (c.4k p.a.) - probably the sweet spot for price and condition. But as the previous poster says, I’d go look at cars over 100k as well, and pull the trigger, if colour, spec, condition and price stack up.

Probably something to do with a bit of OCD, definitely don’t intend on squirrelling the car away, it will definitely be used, and plan on it being a long term purchase so won’t be worried about future value. If any are out there that may want a new home I’m won’t rule things out just for a few miles extra on the clock.

Sound approach I'd say!
