Hi,
I recently signed up to the forum. Hoping to venture into the world of Z4 ownership just as soon as I find a suitable example that fits my budget. I've been looking for just over a week now and have noticed quite a few pre-05's that are up for sale. Only thing is, a good majority of them seem to have a mileage of between 90-95k. Does the Z4 require some sort of expensive service at that age which is why people get rid? Also, what is the general build quality of a Z4 like? Having come from a Megane R26 which felt like it was held together with glue, I'm looking for something which has a high quality, solid feel to it. I'm assuming with it being a BMW, that it will.

Cheers
James:)

The Z4 is a robust and reliable work horse of a car with quality that dates extremely well considering some models are coming up to 10 years old now. That, coupled with the ability to still turn heads for a car you can pick up now for under £6k... it's one of the best bargains in the motoring world.

Most people will tell you if you like your grunt from your cars then to pick up a decent 3.0 model as they have more than enough pull from the fun pedal without having to go over the £12k mark for an M variation.

That being said the 2.2, 2.5 models have excellent economical benefits without being slow either.

I can get 32mpg around town from my 2.5, up to 40-45 on motorway trips.

These are solidly built cars but there are a few known weaknesses. Electric roof motor fail due to water getting in 1000 pound fix. Steering column problems and suspension bush failures and rear springs with a tendency to snap.

Engine should be pretty bullet proof if serviced correctly. Get the 3 litre if you can.

Good luck!

I gonna try to give some indications.

I have a friend of mine with a R26 Megane RS. This is very efficient. The acceleration is a little better compare to my Z4 3,0si, but I was able to turn faster.

Another friends had a Mazda MPS and change for a Z4 roadster 3,0 (ph1). He was very pleased with the Z4 and did have any regret in the change.

So, I believe you will appreciate a lot the Z4.

100 k miles is not too much.

I have led two Z3 at more than 130 k miles.

Of course, as others, I will recommend the Z4 3.0 version to keep in the same range of power.

Thanks for the information guys. I've just found one with 92k on the clock, but it seems to be a low owner, FSH one, so might try and get over to see it.
Yeah, the R26 was good off the mark, I just found the build quality to be extremely poor. I owned a 09 astra VXR prior to that and the build quality was far better. I got sick of things dropping off the R26
